Cloth, large 8vo, 28 cm, 221, [2] pp, 210 illustrations, 32 colour plates with gold. From the preface by J.J.G. Alexander : "This book is an introduction to one of the most significant art-forms of the Middle Ages by one of the world's greatest authorities on the subject, Professor Otto Pacht. It is not a history of book illumination in the conventional sense but a unique account of facts and ideas gathered during several decades of teaching and research. Based on lectures given at the University of Vienna, the present text not only examines all types of decoration and illumination from the point of view of format and style, but also goes far beyond the factual. The author explains the basic vocabulary and concepts by which this art-form is to be understood, and offers deep insights into the fundamental philosophy, theology, technology and cultural ambience that underlie the production of book illumination throughout its long history. In examining in detail the relationships between script and decoration, between image and frame, surface and space, Professor Pacht opens the reader's eyes to new aspects of the art of book illumination. He gives an invaluable account of the transition from roll to codex and the resulting problems and solutions affecting page lay-out; and he analyzes the function and development of the initial, the traditions of Bible, Psalter and Apocalypse illustration, and the particular characteristics of didactic pictures. The volume is richly illustrated with carefully chosen examples ranging from late-antique roll illustration to Renaissance miniatures; and the thirty-two colour plates, with special gold printing, in themselves provide a visual survey of the art of the medieval book. A select Bibliography and a Glossary of technical terms has been included to help the reader, and the book also contains a most useful Bibliography of Otto Pacht's writings on book illumination." Aggiungi al carrelloCloth, 4to, xvi, 108 pp and 66 plates. From the blurb: "The Bodleian library collections of Western illuminated manuscripts are among the richest in the world, but only a small proportion of them have ever been published or studied for their illumination alone. Here for the first time they are all arranged chronologically and by country of origin. Post-medieval manuscripts are included if they are illuminated." Volume 1 includes some 900 manuscripts of the Continental schools other than the Italian, with nearly 450 illustrations. From a contemporary review of the first volume: "The purpose is to provide a list of illuminated manuscripts and printed books in the Bodleian and to accompany that list with a collection of small-size illustrations so that the inquirer and student may have some idea of their appearance. Each item is numbered and a large majority of them are illustrated. There are sixty-six plates, with nearly 450 illustrations. The value of such a collection of material is enormous, since in most great libraries there are tracts of uncatalogued manuscripts which defy all the wiles and energies of the investigator. [The authors'] method is to provide short descriptions for each book, giving the call- mark, the date, a general title, a note of the miniatures, binding where suitable, the provenance and a select bibliography. Naturally there are some magnificent things in all sections and some quite unknown splendours." Near Very Good with the remains of a torn dustwrapper laid in.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover with dusjacket.152 p., incl. 67 ills., with 1 in colour, 200 x 280 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9781872501260. Pacht's well-known, fundamental text approaches art history by means of analyses of works of art and exploration of the theories of major thinkers, yet emphasizes on showing the student and general reader alike how to practise art history in their own encounters with works of art. Here, for the first time in English, is Pacht?s well-known, fundamental text, Methodisches zur Kunsthistorischen Praxis. Pacht?s approach to art history is shaped by his conviction that visual art, like music, can say things in its own medium that cannot be said in any other. He aims to sharpen our perceptions by recreating the social and cultural context in which an object was made, clarifying unfamiliar notions of space and time or significant gestures and symbols which are no longer recognizable. Each part of Pacht?s analysis is illustrated by reference to a specific manuscript, painting, building or sculpture, and his examples range fro medieval and Renaissance art through to the works of Rembrandt. He explores the theories of major thinkers from Riegl, Wolfflin and Croce to Panofsky and Gombrich. But the emphasis always returns to the activity of looking, and Pacht?s greatest achievement is in showing the student and general reader alike how to practise art history in their own encounters with works of art. 0 g.…
