Based on th…e Italian original by A. Gonzales Palacios, with English translation by William Packer, the volume explores David's iconic portraiture, Neoclassical aesthetics, politically charged commissions, and the painters shaped by Napoleonic patronage. Dozens of full-page plates, color and black-and-white, are beautifully reproduced, accompanied by contextual commentary and a detailed plate list. The oversized hardcover features a striking inset reproduction of David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps on a black panel, framed within McCall's distinctive white-and-black design. The interior remains exceptionally clean: pages are crisp, bright, and unmarked, with illustrations retaining excellent color fidelity and contrast. All sections including plate listings, artist biographies, and historical essays are complete and well preserved. The volume was printed in Italy under the original series title Mensile d'Arte. Condition (Book: Near Fine): Exceptionally well preserved for this series, with tight binding, sharp corners, and clean interior pages. Boards show only minimal shelf rub and faint handling marks to the white paneling - none detracting from presentation. No writing, remainder marks, or foxing observed. Lacks the dust jacket, as is common for many U.S.-market copies of the McCall/Fabbri art titles. A superior example of this visually impressive monograph and unusually clean for its age.

" Herman Witsius (1636-1708) was born in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands, to God-fearing parents who dedicated their first child to the Lord even before he was born. Witsius was an avid learner, beginning Latin studies at the age of five. When he began his theological training in Utrecht at the age of fifteen, he could read Greek and Hebrew. These were formative years for Witsius, and under the tutelage of Gisbertus Voetius, he learned how to weave precise Reformed orthodoxy into heartfelt, experiential piety. On July 8, 1657, Witsius was ordained into the ministry. Throughout his life, Witsius held four pastorates, each yielding much fruit. In 1675, he was called to be a professor of theology, a position he served in for the rest of his life. His life as a pastor and professor was marked by mediating disputes. Throughout many controversies, Witsius proved himself to be a meek and humble biblical and systematic theologian, dependent on the Scriptures. Witsius died in October 1708, but his life and works have left an influence for generations all around the globe. His translator, William Pringle, wrote that his writings "are destined to hold an enduring place among the stores of Christian theology. In extensive and profound acquaintance with the doctrine of Scripture, powerful defense of the truth against attacks of adversaries, and earnest exhortations to a holy and devout life, he has few equals." This, Witsius's magnum opus, is a reflection of some of the most fruitful and mature thinking on federal theology during the seventeenth century. It still holds a pre-eminent place today. Reformed theology has always understood the biblical doctrine of the covenant to be the theological framework that best unifies Scripture to make a consistent hermeneutic. Witsius presents the reader with a fully biblical and experiential doctrine of the divine covenants, opening up their nature, stipulations, curses, and blessings. Anyone interested in Reformed theology should read these volumes, for they represent Reformed theology at its best.".
