Hardbound. Condizione: Good. First Printing, so stated. Description: Illustrated with black and white drawings by the author and with maps. This is a sequel to The Wake of the Prairie Schooner. In this book the author describes two famous illusory 'short cuts' traveled by early California-bound pioneers -- the Hastings and Lassen cut-offs. The Hastings' Cut-Off led ninety miles across the Great Salt desert; the delay in taking this route contributed to the Donner party disaster. Equally treacherous was Lassen's Cut-Off. This route wound painfully through the Sierras and many a 49er referred to it bitterly as the Greenhorn Cut-Off. Mrs Paden and her family re-traced, landmark for landmark, these covered-wagon routes. The informal story of her latter day adventures serves as a deliberate contrast to the trials of the pioneers. For fifteen years Mrs Paden studied the overland trails, read the known diaries, uncovered new ones, kept notes, pored over maps and states that every person in her book is, or was, real, and that every incident happened. Listed in Paher's Nevada, Number 1500. BINDING/CONDITION: tan cloth with blue; owner's name/address stamp, and a finger smudge on the front endpaper, otherwise a Very Good book, with a Fair dust jacket. bibliography, index. 8vo (8.5 inches tall). 295 pages.

SIGNED by the Author ."With my best wishes Irene D. Paden" Prairie Schooner Detours, by Irene D. Paden (1949), is a non-fiction book detailing two infamous pioneer "shortcuts" to California: the Hastings Cutoff and Lassen's Cutoff, which were notoriously difficult and contributed to the Donner Party tragedy. Paden retraced these routes in the 1940s by car and on foot, contrasting her modern journey with the pioneers' experiences, using historical diaries and her own research to provide a firsthand account of the trails' challenges. It's a work of travel literature and American West history, known for its blend of historical research and personal adventure.
