No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Sir Leslie Ward (1851-1922), 'Spy'; caricaturist and portrait painter; son of Edward Matthew Ward (illustratore). Chromolithograph, published in Vanity Fair. September 29, 1877. (38 cm x 26 cm) paper size. Image size: 210 x 184 mm. In acid free Mylar sleeve. Created by the famous artist Leslie Ward under his pseudonym "Spy." Harry Benson (active 1877), Confidence trickster; convicted of forgery and bribing police officers. Harry Benson was a trickster and a fraud who managed to fleece the wealthy out of thousands of pounds. Questions started being raised about the ease in which he operated and the difficulties the police had in tracking him down. When Harry Benson and his accomplice William Kurr were caught and imprisoned, they confessed to their close relationship with the police and how at least half the officers were 'in their pocket'. When the case came to court in 1877, it was revealed that police Inspectors were taking bribes. 'The Trial of the Detectives' as it became known caused a sensation because Benson and Kurr, still in jail, became witnesses against the police, revealing the full extent of police corruption at the time.

Chromolithograph, published in Vanity Fair March 31, 1904. (38 cm x 26 cm) paper size. Image size: 340 x 200 mm. In acid free Mylar sleeve. Created by the famous artist Leslie Ward under his pseudonym "Spy." Slight tears in blank margins. Hermann Adler HaKohen CVO (30 May 1839 - 18 July 1911; Hebrew: ????? ??? ???? ???? ????) was the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire from 1891 to 1911. The son (and successor as Chief Rabbi) of Nathan Marcus Adler, the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica writes that he "raised the position [of Chief Rabbi] to one of much dignity and importance." Naftali (Hermann) Adler was born in Hanover. Like his father, he had both a rabbinical education and a university education in Germany, and like him he subscribed to a modernised orthodoxy. He attended University College School in London from 1852 to 1854 and rabbinical college in Prague. He graduated from Leipzig in 1862 with a PhD. He received his semikha (Rabbinic ordination) from Rabbi Solomon Judah Loeb Rapoport. He later received honorary degrees from Scottish and English universities, including Oxford. He was head of the congregation of Bayswater Synagogue, Paddington, during his father's lifetime, and his father's assistant from the time his father's health began to deteriorate in 1879, before succeeding him on his death in 1891. In 1892 a new headquarters of the Dublin Hebrew Congregation was established. The building was consecrated by Adler who declared "Ireland is the only country in the world which cannot be charged with persecuting Jews". In 1909 he was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). Once he was having a lunch with British Catholic cardinal Herbert Vaughan. The cardinal asked the rabbi "Now, Dr. Adler, when may I have the pleasure of helping you to some ham?" The rabbi responded: "At Your Eminence's wedding". Adler wrote extensively on topics of Anglo-Jewish history and published two volumes of sermons. He was a vigorous defender of his co-religionists and their faith, as well as their sacred scriptures. He is buried in the Willesden United Synagogue Cemetery in London.

Henry Ernest Schlesinger Benzon ('Men of the Day. No. 383. "The Jubilee Plunger."') by Sir Leslie Ward. Chromolithograph, published in Vanity Fair 23 July 1887. (38 cm x 26 cm) paper size. Image size: 305 x 185 mm. In acid free Mylar sleeve. "The Jubilee Plunger" was the nickname for Henry Ernest Schlesinger Benzon (1866-1911), a notorious Victorian-era gambler who famously squandered a £250,000 fortune (roughly £30 million today) in 1887. Descended from a Jewish family from Hamburg who made money in the Midlands in the manufacture of iron. Known for massive, market-disrupting bets on horses and reckless spending, he became a cultural sensation, later writing a memoir about his exploits. Son of a wealthy steel merchant, Benzon obtained his fortune upon turning 21, just in time for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee year (1887). Gambling Style: He was a "plunger" - a 19th-century term for a gambler who stakes large sums of money. He gambled on races, cards, and frequently engaged in absurd, high-stakes coin tosses in bars. His reckless betting often disrupted the turf market. He was featured in a Vanity Fair "Spy" cartoon in July 1887, offered here. He was a member of the Pelican and Gardenia Clubs. He was known for being good-natured despite his ruinous habits. The Jubilee refers to Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, in 1887m marking 50 years of her reign. On December 11, 1911 the New York TImes had an article on him that starts: LONDON, Dec. 10. Ernest Benzon, who in 1887 won considerable notoriety by gambling away $1,250,000, within a year, becoming known as the "Jubilee Plunger," has just died in London. He was intensely proud of his gambling exploits, and wrote a book recounting them.
