Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original red and black lettered cream wraps 14x21cm. 49pp French text + 4 unindexed leaves of full-page b/w photos. Wraps very good, spotted. The text block is coming loose from the wraps, with the interiors otherwise very good. Rare with Worldcat and Library Hub locating 12 copies… between them (OCLC 493673595, 734082906). Undated here, but stated 1954 in the publications list of one of the author's other works (Destinees Persanes). Qazvin was at one time a frontier fortress town, the Safavid imperial capital, a major hub on the Silk Road, and a centre for the arts. The author notes that most present day travellers pass through as quickly as possible on their way to or from Tehran. With its Museum due to open shortly, she describes its present appearance, ambience, location, rich history, architecture, art, infrastructure, economy etc, for those tempted to linger. Among her other works was the guide book and history "Vieux Teheran - Promenades dans Teheran au Siecle Passe" (1951). Emineh (or Amineh) Pakravan (1893-1958) was born in Paris to an Austrian writer, and the one time Iranian Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. She grew up in Istanbul, then became well known in Egypt for her writings on Iran. She married the diplomat Fathollah Pakravan. Moving to Iran, she taught French literature and art history at Tehran University, wrote on Iranian history, and promoted Persian miniature painting to a western audience.

Covers very good or better with a couple of small patches of paper residue stuck to the front. Interiors fine with previous owner's name to the ffep. Jacket good with short closed tears and a couple of small scuffed areas. Rare. [WITH] Photocopy of the 1st edition: 15x22cm, including wraps and 59pp stapled folded leaves. Very good. After moving to Iran she taught French literature and art history at Tehran University, wrote on Iranian history, and promoted Persian miniature painting to a western audience. This work was first published in 1951 from a lecture she gave at the Institut Franco-Iranien in Tehran, and it quickly sold out. It was not intended as a complete history or guide, but rather "an evocation of a world that has so completely disappeared --- certainly old Tehran was a primitive city lacking in beauty, but it exuded a penetrating poetry that the reader may perhaps perceive, like the subtle trace sometimes left by a long vanished perfume" (Note de l'editeur). The posthumous 2nd edition adds illustrations and plans that show Tehran through time. Several plates are from paintings and drawings by Eugene Flandin who was in Iran in the 1830s-40s, a couple by Jules Laurens (1840s), and the rest uncredited including early photos. The earliest dated is 1810. The final double page photo panorama appears to be the latest and contemporary, with a VW Beetle and other period traffic visible. The Plans show Tehran in 1858 and 1890. The jacket illustration reproduces a gouache by Brotons.
