Traktat des IV. Buchs nimmt eine mittlere Stellung zwischen einem ersten, Gott als Prinzip der Schöpfung gewidmeten Teil und dem dritten, den geistigen Substanzen behandelnden Abschnitt ein. Er besteht aus 24 Kapiteln, in denen Ulrich sein metaphysisches Denken artikuliert, handelt er doch hier »Von der ersten formalen Hervorbringung des Vaters, des Schöpfers der Allheit, d.h. vom Sein und dessen ersten Unterteilungen im Allgemeinen, das ist Substanz und Akzidens, und von den ihm ihrem Wesen nach Folgenden, d.h. Ursache und Verursachtes, Potenz und Akt, Einheit und Vielheit«. Das Sein, von dem Ulrich spricht, ist »das erste der geschaffenen Dinge« - ganz im Sinne des am Anfang des Traktats ausdrücklich zitierten Liber de causis, d.h. im Sinne des »ersten und eigentlichen Ausfließens des ersten Prinzips«, das das erste und allgemeinste Fundament jeder weiteren formalen Bestimmung ist. Die ersten Schritte von Ulrichs Ontologie wurden bereits in der Edition Sabine Pieperhoffs (1987) dokumentiert. Der Schlußteil über die Lehre der zehn aristotelischen Kategorien wurde von Burkhard Mojsisch und Fiorella Retucci ediert (2008).Dieser Band enthält eine ausführliche Lehre von der Substanz, von den aristotelischen Ursachen und von der Ordnung der Welt. Ulrich behandelt hier auch die neuplatonische Lehre von der »wesentlichen Kausalität« der Intelligenzen.
