Quentin Skinner's treatment of political theory as a dimension of political life marks a revolutionary move in the historical as well as the philosoph…ical study of political thought. Skinner brings the study of political theory closer to the language of agents and treats theorists as politicians of a special kind. Skinner has become internationally renowned for this approach, which ties together historical and contemporary analysis in order to integrate the study of the past and the present, and which tries fully to uncover the historical context and development of key concepts in political theory such as freedom and the state. This volume charts Skinner's work from the early 1960s right up to the present, including his most recent studies in the theory of persuasive speech, and is organized around five major themes: history, linguistic action, political thought, liberty and rhetoric. It pays particular attention to Skinner's work in relation to that of continental thinkers, especially Max Weber and Reinhart Koselleck. The book will be essential reading for students and scholars of political and social theory, history, philosophy and cultural studies.

The essays are A New Look at 'National Identity' by Bernhard Peters; Do the old exploit the young? Is enfranchising children a good idea? by Karl Hinrichs; Social justice and the three… worlds of welfare capitalism by Wolfgang Merkel; The public sphere and Muslim societies by Dale F. Eickelman & Armando Salvatore; Rationality and identity: a critique of Alessandro Pizzorno; and Rehabilitating the politician by Kari Palonen (they threw that last one in for humor). You can see the covers in the photos. They're very clean. It looks like Dr. Bell penned the number '1' on the front cover. That is the correct number. It does look like they may have printed the wrong number on the Journal (that gives it inestimable monetary value). The covers are in solid condition. A little bit of crinkling in a place or two. There's a thin scuff on the spine. The interior looks perfect. Dr. Bell did not write his name or anything else in the book which I would've preferred. The pages are perfectly clean. I don't see any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no writing of any kind. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. That should cover it.
