Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This is an introductory book on the general theory of relativity based partly on lectures given to students of M.Sc. Physics at my university. The book is divided into three parts. The rst part is a preliminary course on general relativity with minimum preparation. The second part builds the ma- ematical background and the third part deals with topics where mathematics developed in the second part is needed. The rst chapter gives a general background and introduction. This is f- lowed by an introduction to curvature through Gauss' Theorema Egregium. This theorem expresses the curvature of a two-dimensional surface in terms of intrinsic quantitiesrelatedtothein nitesimaldistancefunctiononthesurface.Thestudent isintroducedtothemetrictensor,Christo elsymbolsandRiemanncurvaturet- sor by elementary methods in the familiar and visualizable case of two dimensions. This early introduction to geometric quantities equips a student to learn simpler topics in general relativity like the Newtonian limit, red shift, the Schwarzschild solution, precession of the perihelion and bending of light in a gravitational eld. Part II (chapters 5 to 10) is an introduction to Riemannian geometry as - quired by general relativity. This is done from the beginning, starting with vectors and tensors. I believe that students of physics grasp physical concepts better if they are not shaky about the mathematics involved.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this book, the author addresses selected topics in quantum mechanics that are not usually covered in books, but which are very helpful in developing a student's interest in, and a deeper understanding of the subject. The topics include two different ways of looking at quantum mechanics; three clarifying topics that students often find confusing; one classic theorem never proved in the classroom; and a discussion on whether there can be a non-linear quantum mechanics. The book can be used as supporting material for graduate-level core courses on quantum mechanics.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This second edition of Some Unusual Topics in Quantum Mechanics builds upon the topics covered in the first, with additional chapters that delve deeper into the mathematical foundations of the subject. New topics include Hilbert spaces and unbounded operators, minimum uncertainty states, path integrals in general coordinates, Fock spaces, second quantization, relativistic particle states, and quantum fields. Historical insights are also included, such as a pre-history of matrix mechanics and Pauli's proof of the H-atom spectrum using O(4) symmetry. Finally, readers are introduced to Bell's inequality and the non-locality in quantum mechanics that is revealed through its violation. These topics are rarely covered in introductory textbooks but are crucial to developing a student's interest and deeper understanding of quantum mechanics. This book serves as valuable supporting material for graduate-level core courses on the subject.

From the author's Preface: "This is an introductory book on the general theory of relativity based partly on lectures given to students of M.Sc. Physics at my university. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is a preliminary course on general relativity with minimum preparation. The second part builds the mathematical background and the third part deals with topics where mathematics developed in the second part is needed. The first chapter gives a general background and introduction. This is foilowed by an introduction to curvature through Gauss' Theorema Egregium. This theorem expresses the curvature of a two-dimensional surface in terms of intrinsic quantities related to the infinitesimal distance function on the surface. The student is introduced to the metric tensor, Christoffel symbols and Riemann curvature tensor by elementary methods in the familiar and visualizable case of two dimensions. This early introduction to geometric quantities equips a student to learn simpler topics in general relativity like the Newtonian limit, red shift, the Schwarzschild solution, precession of the perihelion and bending of light in a gravitational feld. Part II (chapters 5 to 10) is an introduction to Riemannian geometry as required by general relativity. This is done from the beginning, starting with vectors and tensors. I believe that students of physics grasp physical concepts better if they are not shaky about the mathematics involved.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover.
