Bibliography. Index. slight wear to DJ. Known as father of the American H-Bomb, Teller continues to play a crucial role in U.S. nuclear weapons policy. Born a Hungarian Jew in 1908, the young physicist studied with such greats as Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr. Fleeing Nazism, he became a member of the Manhattan Project team which developed the world's first atomic bomb. Stanley A. Blumberg was a Baltimore author, inventor and Middle Eastern expert who collaborated on two books about nuclear physicist Edward Teller. It was on a visit to Israel that Mr. Blumberg noticed Dr. Teller standing outside of a Tel Aviv hotel, introduced himself to the man often called the father of the hydrogen bomb, and asked why no one had written his biography. Dr. Teller said he was far too controversial, that no one would ever publish a book about his life and then challenged Mr. Blumberg to do the project. The result was "Energy and Conflict," co-authored with Gwinn fTC Owens, a former Evening Sun op-ed page editor. It was published in 1976, and became a Book-of-the Month Club alternate selection. In 1990, he turned out a second biography, "Edward Teller," with co-author Louis G. Panos, a former Evening Sun editorial page editor. "He took on an unpopular subject in an unpopular atmosphere because he felt it was worth doing. His work gave credence to a cloudy subject," Mr. Panos said. Lou Panos covered 40 sessions of the Maryland General Assembly during his 60 years as a working journalist. Panos started his career in high school as a teletype attendant for the Associated Press. He spent 20 years at AP, mostly in Baltimore, but he also covered federal agencies in Washington including the White House and the Justice Department when Bobby Kennedy was attorney general. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Teller continues to play a crucial role in U.S. nuclear weapons policy. Born a Hungarian Jew in 1908, the young physicist studied with such greats as Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr. Fleeing Nazism, he became a member of the Manhattan Project team which developed the world's first atomic bomb. Despite opposition from Robert Oppenheimer, the Manhattan Project's top scientist, Teller persuaded President Truman to develop the hydrogen bomb; history backs up his position on the H-bomb, note the authors, as we now know that the Soviets exploded a thermonuclear device before the U.S. did. Instrumental in founding California's Lawrence Livermore Research Laboratory, Teller was at the time this was published the leading scientific proponent of building strategic defenses against Soviet nuclear attack. Blumberg and Panos, a Baltimore Sun columnist, have done a thorough job of reconstructing the life of this complex man.
