Nella sua pittura, l'artista sviluppa un linguaggio visivo altamente complesso, la cui apparente oggettività si dissolve, a uno sguardo più attento, in un mondo misterioso ricco di simboli e allusioni. La fase creativa della sua pittura metafisica, iniziata a Parigi nel 1911, raggiunge il culmine tra il 1915 e il 1918 a Ferrara, in Italia. Qui, l'incontro con Carlo Carrà segna nel 1917 la nascita di quella che sarà poi definita 'Scuola Metafisica'. Questo catalogo presenta numerosi capolavori di de Chirico e Carrà accanto a opere di artisti del Dadaismo, Surrealismo e Nuova Oggettività, rivelando così la ricezione internazionale immediatamente successiva alla nascita della peculiare lingua visiva della pittura metafisica. In opere straordinarie di René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst e George Grosz, emergono motivi come il 'manichino' senza volto o l''immagine nell'immagine', testimoniando l'intensa interazione con de Chirico.
