Quisiera llamar la atención del lector sobre el hecho de que este libro es el primero (y por el momento el único) que parece posible atribuir (como diría Borges) a Paolo Fabbri (. . . ), sin duda el semiólogo más importante de Italia después de Umberto Eco, y presente en la escena internacional de la semiótica desde hace muchos años. (. . . ) Veo el proyecto intelectual de Paolo Fabbri (y este será el único uso que me permitiré de mi "autoridad" de director de colección y prefaciador, y, por supuesto, a título de mirada exterior) como un resultado del cruzamiento de varias influencias. La de Umberto Eco, sin lugar a dudas, aunque ignoro la alquimia sutil que pudo producirse, a lo largo de tantos años de contacto, entre ambos. No sorprenderá a nadie recordar que los temas del secreto, del complot, de la paradoja, del carácter en cierto modo interminable e indeterminable de la interpretación, atraviesan toda la obra de Eco, tanto la obra semiótica cuanto la obra ficcional. La de Erving Goffman, con el cual Paolo Fabbri comparte el interés por las tácticas internacionales, por la complejidad problemática de la más banal situación social y también la fascinación por elucidar algo así como la paranoia natural del actor social. La de Algirdas Julien Greimas, en términos de los modelos que, en un momento o en otro, Paolo Fabbri evoca para analizar un determinado tema. Pero yo diría que Paolo Fabbri tuvo siempre con la obra de Greimas (no así con la persona) una relación exterior, casi instrumental: Greimas le proporcionó, en determinadas ocasiones, útiles que le servían para tratar un problema. Pero el espíritu enciclopédico, totalizador, en cierto modo escolástico de Greimas, me parece totalmente ajeno a la posición intelectual de Fabbri. La de la pragmática lingüística, a partir de un cierto momento de su evolución intelectual. Con la ventaja sobre ella que su percepción aguda de las tácticas y estrategias le permitió a Fabbri no caer en ningún momento en la hipótesis de un hablante racional, sincero y voluntarioso a la manera de Searle, Grice o Strawson, que sin duda existe, pero solamente en la sala de profesores de la universidad de Oxford. La de Jean Baudrillard, en fin, a través de la preferencia acordada a las nociones de simulación y de simulacro, y a una visión yo diría un poco apocalíptica de la evolución de las sociedades industriales. Esta es la influencia que más me aleja de Paolo Fabbri. Sea como fuere, el cruzamiento de esas influencias e interacciones dio como resultado un semiólogo que no se parece a ningún otro: Paolo Fabbri. Del prefacio de Eliseo Verón Paolo Fabbri es catedrático de Semiótica del arte en el DAMS de Bolonia. Ha trabajado durante muchos años en París con Algirdas J. Greimas en la École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Ha dado clase en las Universidades de Florencia, Urbino y Palermo, y en muchas otras universidades europeas y norteamericanas. Ha sido director del Istituto Italiano di Cultura de París.
