For most of the 20th century, the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) was the primary United States government agency conducting scientific research and disseminating information on the extraction, processing, use, and conservation of mineral resources. The Bureau was abolished in 1996. From its creation, the USBM was viewed, both nationally and internationally, as the focal point for new and emerging science and technology in the minerals field. Since entering competition in 1978, the Bureau of Mines won 35 R&D 100 Awards, given annually by R&D Magazine for the 100 most important research innovations of the year. The explosion of the first atom bomb at Alamogordo, New Mexico, in 1945 demonstrated that power could be developed from new types of naturally occurring materials. The new sources of power were the minerals containing uranium. Although uranium was a relatively new word to the public in 1945, scientists had studied it for over a half century before its application to nuclear weapons. Uranium is widely distributed throughout the earth's crust; its average concentration is estimated at 0.0003 percent, or about 3 grams per ton of rock. Such trace amounts are not recoverable, however, and deposits containing much greater percentages of uranium must be found before mining is economically feasible. The public and the minerals industry have avidly participated in the Government's program for the exploration and recovery of uranium, with the result that a once relatively rare metal in apparent short supply has now become available to such a degree that our defense requirements can be met and peaceful uses for the metal actively explored. The purpose of this handbook is to answer, in a general way, the large number of questions of a nontechnical and semitechnical nature submitted by the public regarding uranium prospecting, mining, milling, and refining. It is to be emphasized that the report is intended to be brief and concise.
