Is it possible to protect the historic centres of towns without either detracting from their authenticity or conserving them in artificial isolation? The author of this book shows, with examples from numerous European cities, how an adaptation of a historic center to the needs of today can be achieved. The concept of the retention and protection of im portant monuments became prevalent in the nine teenth century in Europe. However, it was not until the twentieth century that the idea of conserv ing and regenerating whole historic areas gained widespread acceptance. The author points out very convincingly (demonstrating his thesis with over 300 illustrations) the steps that must be taken if we are to protect our architectural heritage. Greece, France and Italy offer a significant body of experience in the preservation of historic districts. Such war-devastated centers as Warsaw and Prague have usefully raised other questions. These the author of this volume has approached both from personal experience as a practicing architect and city-planner as well as from the academic angle. Particularly well reflected in the present volume are his ten years of professional practice in Greece, where he developed his fundamental view of the need to structure the design of historic areas in terms of their relationship to the city in question, to the surrounding landscape and with the contemporary needs of tourist traffic. Everyone interested in historic preservation has sat through endless meetings in which subjects were selected at random and in which conclusions were never reached because there was no agreement on what was important.
