L'aliéniste Gaëtan Gatian de Clérambault (1872-1934), connu pour avoir amélioré la notion de délire passionnel et inventé l'automatisme mental, publia en effet, en 1908, un article présentant une pathologie pour laquelle il forgea le néologisme « hyphéphilie ». Le papier a pour titre…: « La Passion érotique des étoffes chez la femme ». Clérambault s'appuie sur l'observation de trois femmes, arrêtées pour vols d'étoffe, qu'il a examinées et interrogées : « Quand je peux prendre l'étoffe, je la froisse, cela me produit un serrement d'estomac particulier, ensuite, j'éprouve une espèce de jouissance qui m'arrête complètement la respiration ; je suis comme ivre, je ne peux plus me tenir [.] » ; ou encore : « La soie me donne un spasme étonnant et voluptueux. La soie, je ne peux pas la déchirer, cela fait trop. oh ! (mimique d'un frisson). [.] La soie a un froufrou, un cricri qui me fait jouir. ».
