Hardback. Condizione: New. In recent years the narrative surrounding China's "peaceful rise" has given way to a more ominous story of friction, ambition, and great-power rivalry. As Chinese foreign policy has grown more nationalist and assertive, its intensifying competition with the U.S. has assumed center stage. The impact on China's neighbors, by contrast, and their evolving responses, have received comparatively less attention. The Realist theory of international relations suggests the rapid accumulation of power by one nation-state will prompt its neighbors and peers to adopt Balancing strategies. They will strive enhance their internal defense capabilities and forge new external security partnerships to hedge against this potential new threat. Have these predictions rung true? Are key Indo-Pacific capitals Balancing, and drawing closer to the U.S. as insurance against Chinese aggression? Or is China a new breed of rising power, challenging traditional theories of international relations in a newly-globalized, economically interdependent world? In Asia's Quest for Balance: China's Rise and Balancing in the Indo-Pacific leadingauthor-experts from Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam explore these questions and more, decoding China's complex and evolving relationships with its neighbors and exploring how their responses are altering the security landscape of the region.Contributions by Jay L. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book undertakes an in-depth examination of the dynamics of commitment in U.S.-Southeast Asia strategy. Drawing on cases including the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam and Washington's pivot to Asia amid China's growing regional role, it constructs an original balance of commitment model to explain continuity and change in U.S.-SoutheastAsia policy.Balance of commitment goes beyond balance of power approaches toexplains how translating Southeast Asia's importance in U.S. thinking into actual commitments has proven challenging for policymakers as it requires simultaneously calibrating adjustments to power shifts, threat perceptions and resource extraction. The book applies the balance of commitment approach to several practical case studies, based on hundreds of conversations with policymakers and experts in the United States and Southeast Asia, personal experiences across nearly two decades and primary and secondary source material across a half-century. The findings suggest that the challenges of U.S. commitment to the region are rooted not simply in differences between administrations or divergences in outlook between Washington and regional capitals, but tough balancing acts for U.S. policymakers in domestic politics and wider foreign policy. As such, shaping U.S. strategy in Southeast Asia and calibrating and sustaining commitment requires not just appreciating Southeast Asia's significance, but committing to the region in ways that manage structural aspects of U.S. thinking, capabilities and resourcing.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book generates a new connective approach to analyzing Southeast Asia alignment shifts in grand strategy and foreign and security policy. Drawing on cases across nearly a century including the Philippines and U.S.-China competition, Vietnam s multidirectionality after the USSR s collapse and Thailand s WWII Japan alliance it constructs a new Mandalas of Multialignment approach and develops an original Balance of Alignment model rooted in neoclassical realism to explain how states manage alignment challenges. Looking ahead, the book charts out how Southeast Asian states can weave their own alignment webs beyond binaries of great power competition and across spheres of their own influences through a new Connective Alignment Management process.…
