Louis-François-Armand de Vignerod du Plessis, duc de Richelieu, maréchal de France, petit-neveu du cardinal, né en 1696 et mort en 1788, servit trois rois, Louis XIV, Louis XV et Louis XVI, et se maria sous le règne de chacun d'eux. Il mena une carrière brillante : Ambassadeur à Vienne (1725-1728), où il s'employa avec succès au rapprochement de la France et de l'Autriche, il révéla ses talents militaires pendant les guerres de la Succession de Pologne et de la Succession d'Autriche. Maréchal de France (1748), gouverneur de Guyenne et Gascogne (1755), il monta une expédition contre Minorque (1756); il occupa et pilla le Brunswick et le Hanovre (victoire de Kloster Zeven, 1757) et fut ensuite disgracié, en partie sous l'influence de Mme de Pompadour.
