The publication of the First Edition of "Caleb Conover, Railroader" by Albert Payson Terhune, of which this is a specimen, was unusual for a couple of reasons : First, the book, which was published by The Authors and Newspapers Association (unusual enough… in this) was issued with various announcements on the title page of "Special Editions", each designated for specific cities. The copy here presented has printed the announcement "Rothschild Brothers Special Edition - For sale exclusively in Ithaca, N.Y." Why this arrangement should have been made, I know not. Secondly, the publisher affixed an announcement slip with "Notice to Purchaser" printed on it. The statement confers restrictions of sale and handling of the book. At the end is the statement : "Any defacement, alteration or removal of this notice will be prosecuted by the publishers to the full extent of the law." No matter the emptiness of such a notice, people - some at least - may have taken it to heart, for here is that notice still remaining with the book, which is good for the collector, as it further establishes this copy as closest to the original issue, short of the presence of a dust-jacket, which rare item is not present. TITLE : Caleb Conover, Railroader. AUTHOR : Albert Payson Terhune (1872 - 1942) ILLUSTRATOR : Frank Parker (1870 - 1940) IMPRINT : Authors and Newspapers Association. PLACE : New York. DATE : 1907 EDITION : First Edition. SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Publisher's "Notice to Purchaser" Tipped-in to FFEP ; Rothschild Brothers Special Edition for Sale Exclusively in Ithaca N.Y. printed on Title Page; Contains a facsimile sample of Terhune's text in his handwriting. (Plate Facsimile) PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Trade Hardcover; four color plate illustrations after watercolors, including frontispiece with tissue guard; title page rubricated; 322 pages; 4 7/8" x 7 3/8"; olive green cloth-covered boards; title, etc lettered in black on spine and gilt on front cover; front cover has a railroad switch stamped in blind. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attactive, with the following noted: EXTERIOR - Mild weathering - a touch of scattered spotting - board corner tips softly bumped - spine extremities are compressed and exhibit abrasion with fraying just beginning at foot - spine is weathered and has a touch of spotting and is faded. Text-block edges are toned, else clean. BINDING - The book has been read, possibly more than once, and thus the text block is not as tight as when issued - there is a slight laxity to the whole, but it remains fairly solid and holding, with no detached or loose leaves. The hinge at the frontispiece and title is slightly separated. INTERIOR - Smudging to end-papers (possibly elsewhere also, but to no effective degree); tissue guard is foxed; scattered small spotting of no real effect. The neatly inked signature of a previous owner displays on the front free end-paper (just above the publisher's notice slip). Basically the interior is clean and serviceable. DUST - JACKET - Not Present. Frank Parker (illustratore).
