Drawn largely from the glass-plate collections of news and commercial photographer Clesson B. ("Cles") Howland and portrait photographer J. Millard Brainerd, the images record downtown street scenes along Dominick and James Streets, trolleys and horse-drawn traffic, the Erie Canal, public buildings and churches, fine homes, civic and social life, and the 1927 Fort Stanwix-Oriskany Sesquicentennial pageant and Lindbergh flyover. Compiled by Chester Williams and Parker F. Scripture, with captions throughout and endpaper street maps drawn from the 1907 New Century Atlas of Oneida County.
