"Il tenente di Nelson" offre l'eccezionale testimonianza di un ufficiale che combattà al comando del grande ammiraglio inglese: George Samuel Parsons. Il tenente descrisse gli avvenimenti di cui fu spettatore e tra il 1837 e il 1840 le sue memorie apparvero a puntate sul Metropoiitan Magazine. Infine, nel 1843, furono raccolte in un volume pubblicato a Boston. Il libro si apre con il racconto, famosissimo, della condanna a morte dell'ammiraglio Caracciolo nel 1799 e prosegue con la descrizione Nelson in combattimento, durante la cattura della nave di linea francese Gà nà reux.
