Hard Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 4th Printing. 4th printing (Ford-Smith, Folio 76 #1140). Includes publisher's slipcase. Fine book in near fine slipcase. Slipcase faintly scuffed. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2003 Hard Cover. 288 pp. A collection of humorous vignettes by various authors, with contributions by William Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Winston S. Churchill, the Queen of England, G.K. Chesterton, P.G. Wodehouse, Mark Twain, Dorothy Parker, Groucho Marx, etc., etc. Ever since Chaucer's day, when the host of the Tabard Inn in Southwark rose to welcome the Canterbury Pilgrims with a joke, the After Dinner Speech, designed, if possible, to reduce the assembled company to helpless merriment, has presented the ultimate challenge. The best speakers are natural story-tellers - Gerard Hoffnung, reading a selection of letters from continental hoteliers: 'There is a French widow in every bedroom affording delightful prospects'; John Mortimer telling the woeful tale of a man's numerous unsuccessful attempts to murder his wife: 'At no time did Mrs Scott feel that the magic had gone out of their marriage' - and in this collection of post-prandial treasures you will find the very best of them, from Groucho Marx on how to resist a femme fatale, to Ralph Steadman surreally addressing the Lewis Carroll Centenary Dinner. 'Goodness', said a friend on greeting Mae West, 'where did you get those beautiful pearls?' 'Goodness', replied Mae, 'had nothing to do with it.' Shaggy dog stories, practical jokes, sporting anecdotes, rousing toasts, travellers' tales and risque reminiscences rub shoulders in this essential collection with real-life revelations and moments of history. Among the guests are Peter Ustinov, Jilly Cooper, Brian Johnstone, Charles Dickens, Dorothy Parker, Robertson Davies, Henry Grady and A.P. Herbert. There is food and drink in abundance. There is gentle reflection and endearing charm as well as defiant frivolity. Above all there are stories for every occasion - witty, absurd, momentous, philosophical, fascinating, poignant, and forever entertaining.

Offering unique insight into the world of contemporary art, this book looks at four generations of artists, from the established to the newly emerged. Photographs of each of the artists, taken by Amanda Eliasch during 2002 in the artists' studios, are set alongside examples of their work. The text by Gemma de Cruz provides a brief overview of who the artists are, what they do and how their work and ideas fit into the art world at this time. This book draws attention to a particular selection of artists who together form a strong idea of what is happening now in contemporary art in London, featuring artists who are influential alongside those they have influenced. I suppose I became interested in art about ten years ago when I met Charles Saatchi at the Amanpuri Hotel in Thailand. I was sitting by the swimming pool and he was sitting with the film director David Puttnam. He asked me where I lived and I told him in Chester Square. "Well, introduce me to your husband because we need clever young people like him." So we became friends, but not within the art world. Johan was his "cleaner," as he called him, he'd clean up his mess and he cleaned up the Saatchi deal between the old and new companies. I really appreciated Charles's help recently as he assisted me with my photographic shows of nudes. The last one he came to he said, "Oh, definitely, definitely commercial, stick to 1930s Paris." I had been working with Martin Maloney and doing some colour photographs, and Martin said, "Keep on with them." Charles said, "If you keep on with them you'd better go into magazines." So I went to New York and took my book round and I got a call back from Visionaire. I then telephoned Katy Barker who was the only photographic agent I knew and asked her advice. She told me that I couldn't show nudes and that I should do some fashion photographs. So I was introduced to a girl named Rushka Bergman who helped me take the correct photographs for my book. I showed them to the photographer Michel Comte, who took me to Italian Vogue. I then did one or two jobs for Franca, including the Kartell Catalogue, which many photographers did. It showed artists in their chairs. She liked the pictures and suggested I do a book on artists in their studios. I asked for a writer, and Martin suggested Gemma de Cruz, and we drew up a list together. The list in the book is quite varied: It is Young British Artists and a few of the Establishment who actually made the young artists or helped to make them. I liked the older guys because I think as a cu.
