Light handling wear, book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Issued without a dust jacket. -- The complexity of the microbial population of the anima…l gastrointestinal tract has long been recognized. However, investigations have so far been limited to a few major groups considered dominant, and to pathogens that are harmful and may cause disease and financial losses in production animals. Thanks to recent advances - including improved microbiological detection and sampling techniques, and the application of molecular tools to monitor the presence of specific strains in the intestine - our knowledge has increased rapidly in recent years. Additionally, new approaches to improving and/or stabilizing animal health are addressed, with special emphasis on probiotics, including the use of selected bacterial strains as vehicles for delivering pharmaceutically active compounds to the mucosa. The book is unique in several respects: not only in its coverage of an exceptionally broad range of topics in animal gut microbiology, but also in its inclusion of production animals such as fish and reindeer. Scope and content: Topics include colonization, succession, and the composition of mucosal microbial populations in healthy animals. Extensive information is provided on dominant bacterial populations across animal species. Special attention is paid to microbial groups believed to promote health and immune protection in young animals. The development and use of gastrointestinal tract models offer a foundation for studying microbial interactions, and molecular tools are discussed in detail for tracking specific intestinal strains. -- Contents: Part I. The flora and fauna of the developing GI tract 1. Development of the digestive tract of gnotobiotic animals 2. Metabolism and population dynamics of the intestinal microflora in the growing pig 3. Rumen protozoa in the growing domestic ruminant 4. Microbial ecology of the digestive tract in reindeer: seasonal changes 5. Microbial ecology of the GI tract of the growing dog and cat 6. Molecular approaches in the study of gut microecology 7. Models of the gastrointestinal tract to study microbial interactions; II. Pathogenicity in developing animals 8. Adhesins and receptors for colonization by different pathotypes of Escherichia coli in calves and young pigs 9. The farm animal as potential reservoir of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the food chain 10. Pathogenesis and the GI tract of growing fish 11. Modelling of salmonellosis 12. Bacterial colonization of avian mucosal surfaces; Part III. The immune response in growing animals 13.
