However, investigations have so far been limited to a few major groups considered dominant, and to pathogens that are harmful and may cause disease and financial losses in production animals. Thanks to recent advances - including improved microbiological detection and sampling techniques, and the application of molecular tools to monitor the presence of specific strains in the intestine - our knowledge has increased rapidly in recent years. Additionally, new approaches to improving and/or stabilizing animal health are addressed, with special emphasis on probiotics, including the use of selected bacterial strains as vehicles for delivering pharmaceutically active compounds to the mucosa. The book is unique in several respects: not only in its coverage of an exceptionally broad range of topics in animal gut microbiology, but also in its inclusion of production animals such as fish and reindeer.
