Ostrow, a specialist in the art of Post-Tridentine Italy and Roman Baroque sculpture, is professor of art history at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of Art and Spirituality in Counter-Reformation Rome: The Sistine and Pauline Chapels in S. Maria Maggiore (1996), and co-editor of and contributor to Dosso's Fate: Painting and Court Culture in Renaissance Italy (1998), Bernini's Biographies: Critical Essays (2006), and Critical Perspectives on Roman Baroque Sculpture (2014). Patrizia Tosini teaches Early Modern Art History at the Third University of Rome. She has published several works on the figurative arts in the age of Counter-Reformation, among which a monograph on the painter Girolamo Muziano Dalla Maniera alla Natura (2008) and Immagini ritrovate. Ma fu nel Cinquecento e nel Seicento che le cappelle diventarono gli spazi dove le grandi famiglie patrizie e l'alta borghesia romana poterono dimostrare il proprio prestigio sociale. Nella ricchezza degli apparati trionfò l'autorappresentazione di compagnie, casate e grandi uomini. Spesso le cappelle venivano concepite come parti di un sistema più complesso, allargato alla navata e alle altre cappelle, in un dialogo tra le arti e i committenti dei diversi ambienti. La «voce» individuale di ogni cappella (i suoi fini e significati) rispondeva in questo modo al più vasto «discorso» corale delle arti all'interno della chiesa, con esiti sempre più articolati e spettacolari negli anni del Barocco. E se Gianfranco Contini è invocato come modello di approccio critico, non se ne applica però quella che lui stesso, ripetendo con Benedetto Croce che tutte le creazioni poetiche sono «nient'altro che parole, e vanno interpretate in questi limiti», ha definito «critica verbale». Queste Prove di lettura intendono riproporre un modo di affrontare il testo che ne penetri anzitutto le «parole», una per una nel loro significato, e tutte insieme nella loro costruzione grammaticale e sintattica. Raggiunto questo irrinunciabile momento di comprensione, si apre la strada per un commento che potrà sciogliere altri nodi, come quelli del rapporto con la storia e l'ideologia dell'epoca in cui il testo fu prodotto, con la soggettività dell'autore, con le fonti del suo messaggio passate e presenti, interne ed esterne (i cosiddetti rimandi intratestuali e intertestuali). Solo con un'analisi «verbale» di questo tipo, umile e laboriosa, il lettore acquisisce saperi nel campo sia della letteratura sia della lingua, recuperando ricchezze e risorse dell'una e dell'altra.
