Only a few years after the fire that destroyed the Teatro San Benedetto, a new opera house was built for the city of Venice under the architectural guidance of Giannantonio Selva. It opened on 17 May 1792 under the name La Fenice ~ the phoenix. Optimistic as the intention behind the name may have been, it was to bode ill for the Gran Teatro. In the night from 12 to 13 December 1836 the interior of the opera house was completely gutted by fire. It pays homage not only to the past, but above also to the spirit of hope infusing the current reconstruction work on what is surely one of the world's most beautiful opera houses. …
