Moderate toning and dampspotting, faint dampstaining to margins of a few leaves, lower outside corner lacking from leaf containing pp. 5-6, text not affected, ink smudge to p. 11, legibility not affected. A very good copy. $1,250. * Only edition. A chilling early American true crime narrative. The conflict began when Mrs. Maria Schermerhorn cautioned a local young woman against marrying John F. Van Patten, prompting the girl's parents to forbid the courtship. Seeking revenge, Van Patten borrowed a shotgun from a neighbor and visited Mrs. Schermerhorn at her home in Rotterdam, New York. Under the pretense of needing wadding for his gun, he waited until her back was turned as she ascended the stairs to fetch it, and shot her dead (McDade). This pamphlet is one of only three contemporary accounts published on the Van Patten case, all of which are exceptionally scarce.
