Former missionary college copy with their details stamped "Withdrawn" faintly legible beneath a sticker to title page. No other markings. Extremely rare self-published account prepared in the field (no other copies traced). Geoffrey Taylor Bull (1921-99) and George Neilson Patterson (1920-2012), both Scottish missionaries, journeyed through China to the Tibet border in March 1947, where for three years they studied Mandarin and Tibetan. Bull witnessed the last days of Tibetan independence, and was subsequently imprisoned for over 3 years on the pretext of being a spy (after which, he married and served in Borneo). "Patterson of Tibet" served as Medical Officer and diplomatic representative of the Tibetan Resistance Movement during the Chinese invasion. This was produced prior to the imprisonment, and describes the land, manners and customs, sexual practices, disease, caravanserai, treatment of girls and servant girls, lamaseries, earlier travellers, Bull's Tibetan teacher etc. Bull is the main author, drawing on Patterson's interviews with two chief Lamas (pp8-9), and his diary of a trip into the NW (May-June '48).…
