Dit rijk geïllustreerde boek, met veel onbekend beeldmateriaal, maakt voor het eerst sinds lange tijd de balans op van het nieuwe koninkrijk. Vooraanstaande historici beschrijven hoe de nieuwe Nederlandse staat met vallen en opstaan gestalte kreeg. Het was in 1813 nog onduidelijk hoe deze staat eruit moest komen te zien, hoe het territorium moest worden afgebakend, wie er tot de natie behoorden en hoe de bevolking bestuurd moest worden. Het was, kortom, één groot experiment en lang niet in alle opzichten geslaagd. Een nieuwe staat, dat tot stand is gekomen in opdracht van het Nationaal Comité 200 jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, maakt duidelijk dat Nederland nooit af is geraakt. Als de erfenis van tweehonderd jaar Koninkrijk der Nederlanden ons iets toont, dan is het een aaneenschakeling van pogingen om vorm te geven aan de staat, pogingen die tot op de dag van vandaag voortgaan.
