Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. PIONEERING BOOK ON SPECTROSCOPY BY DISCOVERER OF GALLIUM. Paul Ãmile Lecoq de Boisbaudran, a French chemist, was born Apr. 18, 1838. De Boisbaudran was a pioneer in spectroscopic chemistry, by which new elements can be identified in compounds when unfamiliar lines show up in the compound's spectra. De Boisbaudran published the first French book on chemical spectroscopy, Spectres lumineux, in 1874. Putting his methods to good use, De Boisbaudran discovered four new elements in all, including samarium and europium. But his most famous discovery was gallium, which he detected spectroscopically in 1875 and isolated later that year. In 1869, Dmitrii Mendeleev had published his first periodic table. There were three notable "holes" in the table, places were elements would fit, and should fit, but which did not exist, at least according to contemporary chemical knowledge. Mendeleev, very sure of the soundness of his periodic arrangement, predicted that they do exist, and he even gave them names, based on the properties they should have by their place in his table. He called them "eka-boron," "eka-silicon," and "eka-aluminum", and in a way, he challenged chemists to find them. De Boisbaudran was the first to do so. His new element of 1875, which had an atomic weight of about 69, was very close to Mendeleev's predicted atomic weight for "eka-aluminum", 68. De Boisbaudran claimed that he named it gallium after the Latin word for France, but some suspected that he really named it after himself, since "Le Coq" means rooster, and rooster in Latin is "Gallus". Chemical names need more double meanings like this. Mendeleev later claimed to have discovered gallium himself, since his predicted properties, especially the density, turned out to be better than those that de Boisbaudran measured, which did not sit well with de Boisbaudran, or with lab chemists in general. Today, de Boisbaudran gets the credit, although you will never see a discussion of de Boisbaudran that does not include Mendeleev. BOOK DETAILS: Tall 8vo, Contemporary brown morocco (compartmented) over tan boards. Text Volume: vi + 207 pp; Atlas volume: 29 plates on thick paper separated by tissue paper, internally Exc. (See Neville II pp 28-29). VG. REFERENCES: DSB II, 254 ; Bolton 608 ; Poggendorff III, 788. PROVENANCE: From the Arthur C. Greenberg History of Chemistry Library.

"Boisbaudran is best known for his work on spectroscopic methods of elementary analysis. In a volume entitled Spectres lumineux (1874), he reported the results of extensive and refined spectral examination of thirty-five elements. This work was undertaken to test several generalizations relating spectral wavelengh to atomic weight. In this work, Boisbaudran held that the various kinds of spectra for the elements were related to the various motions (rotation, vibration and translation) of the molecules. Boisbaudran was a winner of the 1879 Davy medal (for his discovery of gallium) and the Prix Lacaze.". (DSB II p. 254). Une oeuvre importante de spectroscopie chimique. Bon exemplaire, portant les cachets de l'Ecole de physique et de chimie industrielle. Laboratoire de Mr. Baille".

First apperance of the papers in which Lecoc de Boisbaudran described how he separated Holmium into two kinds of earths and naming them."He accomplished this by fractional prepicitation, first with ammonium hydroxide and then with a saturated solution of potassium sulfate, and found that the constituents of pure holmium solutions precipitate in the folloeing order: terbium, dysprosium, holmium, and erbium. Lecog de Boisbaudran never had an abundant supply of raw materials for his remarkable researches on the rare earths, and he once confided to professor Urbain that most of his fractionations had been carried on on the marble slab of his fireplace."(Weeks "Discovery of the Eelements").Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1886 C.

Boisbaudran's paper: pp. 322-324. First apperance of the paper in which Boisbaudran revealed his discovery of a new earth that precipitated had a unique spectrum. De Boisbaudran named it samaria, after the mineral from which it was derived. The mineral samarskite is named for a Russian mining engineer and Chief of Staff - Corps of Mining Engineers, Colonel Vasili Evgrafovich Samarsky-Bykhovets."Samarium was discovered by French chemist Paul Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1879. He noticed in his research that impure didymium (praseodymium and neodymium with other impurities), seemed to contain more than just didymium based on spectroscopic work on various rare-earth minerals. When Lecoq de Boisbaudran added ammonium hydroxide to a concentrate prepared from the mineral samarskite he observed a precipitate that formed before the didymium (Weeks and Leicester, 1968, p. 685). (2 entire issues offered). Boisbaudran's papers: pp. 493-495 a. pp. 1100-1105. First printing of the paper in which Boisbaudran announced his discovery of Gallium, together with the first printing of the paper in which he, by a series of experiments proved that Gallium, the metal that he had discovered amd named in honour of France, is a true element. A larger paper on the discovery was published in 1877 in "Annales de Chimie et Physique". In 1879 Bausbaudran was awarded the Davy Medal for his discovery of Gallium. "In 1875 Boisbaudran spectroscopically discovered a new element, gallium, which he found in zinc blende from a mine in Hautes-Pyrénées. Continuing his work in Wurtz?s laboratory in Paris, he was a able to obtain the free metal by electrolysis of a solution of the hydroxide in potassium hydroxide. Gallium, Boisbaudran realized, was the "eka-aluminum" predicted by Mendeleev, and was the first of Mendeleev?s predicted elements to be isolated. Boisbaudran?s finding thus provided valuable evidence for the validity of Mendeleev?s periodic classification of the elements."(DSB)."Lecoq de Boisbaudran announced his discovery (by spectroscopic analysis) of the new element gallium. Mendeleev had first predicted its existence and had named it eka-aluminium. The discovery was made in the author's private laboratory, in a specimen of zinc blende from the Pierrefitte mine in the Angelès Valley in the Hautes Pyrénées. He describes how on the evening of 27 August 1875 he detected the existence of this new element, which he named "gallium" in honor of France (Gallia). A month later he "performed in Wurtz's laboratory in Paris.a series of experiments to prove that gallium.is a true element"(Weeks). he discusses how he eventually isloated small amounts of pure metallic gallium and determined its physical and chemical properties. The paper (the paper offered) first describes gallium compounds (e.g., ammonium gallium alum, chloride, oxide, and sulphate)."(Roy G. Neville II, p. 29).

Paris, G. Masson, 1877. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf, raised bands, gilt spine. Light wear along edges. Small stamps on verso of titlepage. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique", 5e Series - Tome 10. 576 pp. a. 2 folded engraved plates. (The entire volume offered). Lecoq de Boisbaudran's paper: pp. 100-141 a. 1 handcoloured engraved plate (showing the two spectral lines of gallium). First appearance of a milestone paper in chemistry and physics in which the author describes how he found the new element Gallium by analyzing spectral lines which he observed on a Pyrenea blende sample, the emission lines corresponding to the eka-aluminum that was predicted by Mendeleev in 1871 and he subsequently isolated the element by electrolysis. This was the first element discovered by use of the spark spectrum. In his discovery of the new element Boisbaudran was not guided by the predictions of Mendeleev, but only by his own law of spectra."Boisbaudran ranks with Bunsen, Kirchhoff, and Crookes as one of the founders of the science of spectroscopy."(Weeks)."Lecoq de Boisbaudran announced his discovery (by spectroscopic analysis) of the new element gallium. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This second edition features new chapters highlighting advances in our understanding of the behavior and properties of scintillators, and the discovery of new families of materials with light yield and excellent energy resolution very close to the theoretical limit. The book focuses on the discovery of next-generation scintillation materials and on a deeper understanding of fundamental processes.Such novel materials with high light yield as well as significant advances in crystal engineering offer exciting new perspectives. Most promising is theapplicationofscintillators for precise time tagging of events, at the level of 100 ps or higher, heralding a new era in medical applications and particle physics.Since the discovery of the Higgs Boson with a clear signature in the lead tungstate scintillating blocks of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter detector, the current trend in particle physics is toward very high luminosity colliders, in which timing performance will ultimately be essential to mitigating pile-up problems. New and extremely fast light production mechanisms based on Hot-Intraband-Luminescence as well as quantum confinement are exploited for this purpose.Breakthroughs such as crystal engineering by means of co-doping procedures and selection of cations with small nuclear fragmentation cross-sections will also pave the way for the development of more advanced and radiation-hard materials. Similar innovations are expected in medical imaging, nuclear physics ecology, homeland security, space instrumentation and industrial applications. This second edition also reviews modern trends in our understanding and the engineering of scintillation materials. Readers will find new and updated references and information, as well as new concepts and inspirations to implement in their own research and engineering endeavors. 424 pp. Englisch.

424 pp. Englisch.
