Vielmehr machte sich das Kerntrio -- verstärkt durch den hervorragenden Percussionisten Mark Walker und Erfolgsproduzent Steve Rodby, die beide auch bereits bei ''Northwest Passage'' dabei waren -- daran, ein ehrgeiziges Projekt zu verwirklichen, das zwar schon oft Gegenstand von Überlegungen gewesen, aber bis dato nie in die Tat umgesetzt worden war: ein Oregon-Album mit symphonischer Begleitung. Wie sich herausstellen sollte, war das auch alles andere als einfach; denn obwohl es im Laufe der langen Bandkarriere bereits mehrfach zu öffentlichen Auftritten von Oregon mit begleitendem Orchester gekommen war, erwies sich die Realisierung entsprechender Aufnahmen als echte Herausausforderung an das Koordinationsgeschick aller Beteiligten; man setzt sich schließlich nicht einfach in das nächstbeste Flugzeug, schnappt sich irgendwo ein freilaufendes Orchester, mietet dann ein passendes (!) Studio und legt los. Nach langem Suchen und einigen planerischen Sackgassen fiel die Wahl schließlich auf Moskau, genauer gesagt auf das ''Große Symphonieorchester des Moskauer Radios im Namen Tschaikowskis'' und das klanglich vorbildliche ''Staats-aufnahmehaus'' des GDRZ. Hier wurden im Juni 1999 innerhalb von nur sechs Aufnahmetagen die 15 Tracks des vorliegenden Doppelalbums eingespielt, die einen Querschnitt durch die gesamte musikalische Geschichte der Gruppe Oregon darstellen. Aufgenommen wurde hierbei strikt simultan; sprich: die Band und das Orchester standen sich im Aufnahmesaal gegenüber und spielten die Stücke gemeinsam. Keine Overdubs, keine Schönheitskorrekturen; lediglich Aufzeichnung und Abmischung mit höchstem Qualitätsanspruch. Insofern vereint ''Oregon in Moscow'' die besten Eigenschaften einer Live-Aufnahme mit denen einer Studioproduktion.
