Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Queering portraiture's gaze--facsimile reproductions of all seven issues of Sepuya's sought-after self-published zineA self-published zine, SHOOT was produced by photographer Paul Mpagi Sepuya from 2005 to 2008. Each of the zine's issues was an experiment by the artist in conceiving of an extended portrait, using contact sheets, outtakes and text. The subjects were Sepuya's friends, muses and collaborators. Like many zines made at the time, these were photocopied on the job and at various copying centers, and the magazine retains much of the artist's hand as well as the idiosyncratic hallmarks of the copy machine that have come to define queer zines since the 1970s. This book brings together, for the first time, all seven issues of the magazine, which are highly sought-after due to the scarcity of the originals today. This early publication by Sepuya showcases the photographic practice that the artist has become known for over the last two decades. Glimpses of the artist can be found throughout the portraits in SHOOT (including one issue devoted to his own self-portrait), as can the mechanics of photography, drawing a line from this early work to his renowned Dark Room series and ongoing portrait-based practice.Paul Mpagi Sepuya (born 1982) is a Los Angeles-based photographer whose projects simultaneously recall and challenge the history of the medium. Sepuya brings a perspective that emphasizes queerness in questioning the singularity of portraits and the dialogue among artist, subject(s) and collaborator. Paperback. Condizione: Fair. Paul Mpagi Sepuya presents the work of one of the most prominent, up-and-coming photographers working today. Sepuya primarily makes studio photographs of friends, artists, collaborators, and himself, inviting viewers to consider the construction of subjectivity. He challenges and deconstructs traditional portraiture by way of collage, layering, fragmentation, mirror imagery, and the perspective of a black, queer gaze. In contrast to the slick artifice of contemporary portraiture, Sepuya suggests the human element of picture taking?fingerprints, smudges, dust on the surface of mirrors. He also allows glimpses into the studio setting?including tripods, backdrops, lenses, and the photographer himself?encouraging multivalent narrative reads of each image. For Sepuya, photography is a tactile and communal enterprise. Although the creation of artist books has been a long-standing part of his practice, Paul Mpagi Sepuya is the first publication of his work to be released widely, copublished with the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis on the occasion of a major solo exhibition.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Paul Mpagi Sepuya reflects on the methodologies, strategies, and points of interest behinda single, expansive body of work at a pivotal moment in his career.Paul Mpagi Sepuya's photography is grounded in a collaborative, rhizomatic approach to studio practice and portraiture. This volume unpacks his Dark Room series (201621), offering a deep dive into the thick network of references and the interconnected community of artists and subjects that Sepuya has interwoven throughout the images. The excavation and mapping of intellectual and artistic data points across the artist's work is presented through three distinct "voices," allowing for a comprehensive cross-referencing of conceptual categories. Each category is alphabetized and illuminated via new texts by curator and scholar Gkcan Demirkazik; selections from previously published texts about the work by critics, colleagues, and friends; quotations of other writers' work that inspire the artist; as well as writings by the artist on his thematic preoccupations as they appear and reappear throughout this ongoing body of work. Dark Room AZmaking, after nearly two decades of practice. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In contrast to the slick artifice of contemporary portraiture, Sepuya suggests the human element of picture takingfingerprints, smudges, dust on the surface of mirrors. He also allows glimpses into the studio settingincluding tripods, backdrops, lenses, and the photographer himselfencouraging multivalent narrative reads of each image. For Sepuya, photography is a tactile and communal enterprise. Although the creation of artist books has been a long-standing part of his practice, Paul Mpagi Sepuya is the first publication of his work to be released widely, copublished with the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis on the occasion of a major solo exhibition.
