Aujourd'hui, l'agriculture est un secteur parmi d'autres. Le sucre reste l'exportation principale à La Réunion mais le nombre d'actifs agricoles pourrait être inférieur à 6000 en l'an 2000. Les textes réunis dans cet ouvrage s'intéressent au sort de ce monde agricole observé sous l'angle économique, juridique, sociologique et anthropologique. Les travaux présentés dans cet ouvrage s'interrogent sur l'évolution des nouvelles structures de productions agricoles mises en place par la SAFER à partir de 1966 sur le changement social tel qu'il est vécu actuellement chez les attributaires SAFER sur les mécanismes culturels et sociaux qui sous-tendent l'organisation économique et sociale des petites communautés rurales à La Réunion. Cette contribution à la compréhension du monde rural réunionnais se veut aussi un plaidoyer pour la relance de l'approche ethnologique des petites communautés rurales dans les sociétés créoles.".
