XX [From the text] For several years the New Mexico Archaeological Society has conducted a field school to teach surveying and recording techniques for rock art. Surveys have been conducted at the Water flow Site and in Carrizo Canyon in the Four Corners Area, and at La Cienega Mesa near Santa Fe. All these schools have been under the leadership of Cole James Bain. In 1975, the rock art field school took as a project the recording of the rock art in Chaco Canyon National Monument, San Juan County, New Mexico, under the auspices of the Chaco Canyon Research Center, directed by Jim Judge. This turned out to be a much larger task than we envisioned at the time, and we ended up spending six seasons at Chaco Canyon, each field school lasting from one to two weeks. In the end some 500 rock art sites were recorded within the boundaries of the National Monument. Site Reports, Maps and photographs have been filed with the Chaco Research Center and with the Museum of New Mexico. This report is not meant to be a comprehensive scientific report, which will be issued by the Chaco Research Center. Instead, it is something of a personal journal showing some, but by no means all, of the rock art sites in Chaco Canyon. These sites have been chosen because of their interest, technique, and to a degree, accessibility. In many cases they are sites my crews did, hence the personal journal aspect of this report. I have done a more comprehensive report, one copy of which is in the Rock Art Archive, Department of Anthropology, Los Angeles, California, and another copy in the library at the Visitor's Center, Chaco Canyon National Monument. This report contains rock art sites in 16 Sections, each being one square mile of Chaco Canyon. This includes sites on both sides of Chaco Wash and includes a large sample of the varied types of rock art in the Monument. Site Numbers are those assigned by the Chaco Research Center in their survey as shown on their master map. Where numbers were not known, references were made to known reference points, such as major ruins. …
