Après avoir séjourné à Rome, il se rendit à Athènes où il goûta aux conférences des philosophes tout en se faisant initier aux Mystères. De ce séjour athénien, il retira une connaissance incomparable de la langue grecque. De retour à Carthage, il mena une vie publique de rhéteur et de conférencier et fut choisi comme prêtre du culte impérial. Surtout connu dans la littérature pour son désopilant « Âne d or », il est aussi l auteur d une « Apologie », dans laquelle il se défend contre les accusations de sorcellerie dont il fut l objet. Comment, en route pour Alexandrie, Apulée retrouva un ancien condisciple d Athènes, comment ce dernier l amena à épouser sa mère, la riche veuve Pudentilla, comment enfin ce mariage lui valut, de la part des gens dont il dérangeait les projets, une accusation de magie il aurait ensorcelé la veuve pour accaparer sa fortune : voilà ce que raconte l Apologie. Le procès eut lieu sous Antonin, entre 148 et 161. Son plaidoyer, rédigé après coup, est un document passionnant pour l histoire de la magie.
