'my high s…chool physics teacher used to say, when he corrected our exams. As he explained to us, he had heard this old printers saying many times before from his father, who was in the printing business himself. This motto is more than simply a justification for the laziness of my teacher who almost never corrected our tests on time. Since it comes out of the printing business - a business hundreds of years old - it has a broader meaning. It expresses the enduring existence of the written word. Hence, letters, black on white, are records of people's thoughts and opinions at specific points in time, from early signs of human existence on cave walls to digital letters on our modern-day computer screens.Newspapers as a medium for writing are of special interest to historians as well as to ordinary people like you and me. Throughout history newspapers have reflected society. However, it would be an over-simplification to reduce the complexity of newspapers to the mere role of mirroring. They give us useful information about editors, journalists and authors. Their patient words waiting to be read become vibrant thoughts - even though reader and source might be years apart. It is the dichotomy of individual and collective experience in reading that creates a readership. Benedict Anderson's concept of imagined communities fits into this context incredibly well. Although a reader might not know all the other readers of his or her newspaper, they still have one thing in common - they have all held the same information in their hands and read the same news. Thus the reader - being aware of this indirectly shared experience - imagines his community of fellow readers. While Anderson refers to communities that overcome all distances I would apply his model to distances in time. It is because of the lasting effect of the written word that, although I am culturally embedded in the 21st century, I can still read, be impressed and influenced by, or even identify with an article that is almost one hundred years old. I leaf through the same pages, look at the same pictures, and think about the same author as did other readers back then. This process - as an extension of Anderson's theory - makes me a part of an imagined community that knows no borders, neither in space, nor in time.

Because it is a broad topic, I will concentrate on the discourse about accommodation, or separation of state and church in America, with a focus on Stephen L. Carter - a distinguished law professor at Yale University. My thesis is that although Carter claims to be a separatist, his contradictory and biased arguments in most of his books indicate his accommodationist position. His methods are the dichotomization of church and state; his claim that society victimizes religion (his strange comparison of the Civil Rights movement and the Anti-Abortion movement); his assertion that religious people are oppressed by the majority (which according to him is religious), the Supreme Court, and American politics. Carter further maintains that religion is trivialized and privatized. His biased view on law is visible in the cases he discusses (predominantly separatist cases). His suggestive and popular style, as well as his constant references to God's will and his opinion that the Bible justifies almost everything, makes his argumentation nearly untouchable. Finally, I will show that Carter clearly holds God above the state and thus, his claim as a separatist cannot be maintained.

James Brown reached his audience in concert halls and via radio and television. As a musician, performer, and role model, he touched the soul of nearly every black American at a time when Afro-Americans sought to re-define themselves. The time had come to create a black Aesthetic that would reshape the Western cultural sphere. Beside James Brown, Black America saw the rise of other cultural heroes like Muhammad Ali and Shaft. They all contributed in their own way to the black liberation struggle. However, the Black Power Movement did not only consist of a cultural branch but also of political and religious organizations. Figures like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King jr. were charismatic leaders whose importance can not be overstressed. Still, the basis of the Black Power Movement (hereafter BPM) was the individual, the group and the community. The black experience, together with black everyday life was the origin and source of the black struggle. Since James Brown grew up in a southern American black community and knew what this experience meant, he was able to authentically convey this on stage. Beyond his career as a musician, he was also interested in the fate of his people. He was in his own way an active political figure, using his popularity to change the social circumstances for black communities. Furthermore, Brown was one of the first black American musicians to enter the white-dominated world of economics. Although he had never been close to black nationalists, he lived - consciously or unconsciously - their visions in great part. Yet he always stressed his belief in the American Dream and patriotism. Consequently, he can be considered a symbol of black cultural Nationalism and a patriotic American at the same time. It is this dichotomy and ambiguity of James Brown that will be discussed in the following essay.

Dante zeichnet darin die damalige politische Landschaft mit all seinen Protagonisten und bezieht durch deren Verortung in Hölle (Inferno), Läuterungsberg (Purgatorio), oder Paradies (Paradiso) indirekt Stellung. Politik bedeutete im späten Mittelalter Europas vor allem den Machtkampf zwischen Papst und Kaiser. Die Frage ob die geistliche und weltliche Sphäre getrennt sein sollten und in welcher Hierarchie sie aufgebaut sind, beschäftigte Dante, was sich in seinem Schreiben manifestierte. Dieser Aufsatz soll belegen, dass Dantes politische Ansichten über das Papsttum, speziell die Rolle von Bonifatius VIII., sich in der Divina Commedia widerspiegeln. Da eine allumfassende Aufarbeitung des kompletten Werks hier weder möglich, noch gewünscht ist, begrenze ich mich auf das trotzdem noch weite Feld des 19. Gesangs des Inferno. Zunächst müssen wir uns jedoch die Vitae von Dante Alighieri und Bonifatius VIII. anschauen, sowie deren politische Ideen verstehen und in den Kontext zur damaligen Geschichte stellen. Erst dann sollen beispielhaft verschiedene Verse des XIX. Canto sowie ihre verschiedenen Bedeutungen und Bilder herausgearbeitet werden. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse der politischen Gegenüberstellung Dantes und Bonifazius VIII. mit den Schlussfolgerungen der Versanalyse kontrastierend zusammengefasst. Angesichts der universalen Fülle an Literatur über Dantes Werk und Leben ist dieser Aufsatz ein kleiner Beitrag, ein kleiner Stern am danteschen Himmelszelt, neben all den anderen Sternen.

Ich werde im folgenden Text versuchen die wandernde Grenze Nordamerikas aus verschiedenen Positionen zu betrachten, um die nationale und welthistorische Bedeutung zu verdeutlichen. Dabei gehe ich im Speziellen auf die Innen und Außenpolitik, die Wirtschaft sowie den technologischen Fortschritt der USA seit dem Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts ein. Das Verhältnis von Siedlern und Indianern ist als ethnologischer Teilaspekt nicht außer Acht zu lassen. Die Konklusion bietet schließlich Raum für die Synthese der genannten Untersuchungsfelder, deren Beitrag zum amerikanischen Selbstverständnis und exceptionalism ich somit belegen möchte.

Die Frage ob die geistliche und weltliche Sphäre getrennt sein sollten und in welcher Hierarchie sie aufgebaut sind, beschäftigte Dante, was sich in seinem Schreiben manifestierte. Dieser Aufsatz soll belegen, dass Dantes politische Ansichten über das Papsttum, speziell die Rolle von Bonifatius VIII., sich in der Divina Commedia widerspiegeln. Da eine allumfassende Aufarbeitung des kompletten Werks hier weder möglich, noch gewünscht ist, begrenze ich mich auf das trotzdem noch weite Feld des 19. Gesangs des Inferno. Zunächst müssen wir uns jedoch die Vitae von Dante Alighieri und Bonifatius VIII. anschauen, sowie deren politische Ideen verstehen und in den Kontext zur damaligen Geschichte stellen. Erst dann sollen beispielhaft verschiedene Verse des XIX. Canto sowie ihre verschiedenen Bedeutungen und Bilder herausgearbeitet werden. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse der politischen Gegenüberstellung Dantes und Bonifazius VIII. mit den Schlussfolgerungen der Versanalyse kontrastierend zusammengefasst. Angesichts der universalen Fülle an Literatur über Dantes Werk und Leben ist dieser Aufsatz ein kleiner Beitrag, ein kleiner Stern am danteschen Himmelszelt, neben all den anderen Sternen. 24 pp. Deutsch.

James Brown reached his audience in concert halls and via radio and television. As a musician, performer, and role model, he touched the soul of nearly every black American at a time when Afro-Americans sought to re-define themselves. The time had come to create a black Aesthetic that would reshape the Western cultural sphere. Beside James Brown, Black America saw the rise of other cultural heroes like Muhammad Ali and Shaft. They all contributed in their own way to the black liberation struggle. However, the Black Power Movement did not only consist of a cultural branch but also of political and religious organizations. Figures like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King jr. were charismatic leaders whose importance can not be overstressed. Still, the basis of the Black Power Movement (hereafter BPM) was the individual, the group and the community. The black experience, together with black everyday life was the origin and source of the black struggle. Since James Brown grew up in a southern American black community and knew what this experience meant, he was able to authentically convey this on stage. Beyond his career as a musician, he was also interested in the fate of his people. He was in his own way an active political figure, using his popularity to change the social circumstances for black communities. Furthermore, Brown was one of the first black American musicians to enter the white-dominated world of economics. Although he had never been close to black nationalists, he lived - consciously or unconsciously - their visions in great part. Yet he always stressed his belief in the American Dream and patriotism. Consequently, he can be considered a symbol of black cultural Nationalism and a patriotic American at the same time. Newspapers as a medium for writing are of special interest to historians as well as to ordinary people like you and me. Throughout history newspapers have reflected society. However, it would be an over-simplification to reduce the complexity of newspapers to the mere role of mirroring. They give us useful information about editors, journalists and authors. Their patient words waiting to be read become vibrant thoughts - even though reader and source might be years apart. It is the dichotomy of individual and collective experience in reading that creates a readership. Benedict Anderson's concept of imagined communities fits into this context incredibly well. Although a reader might not know all the other readers of his or her newspaper, they still have one thing in common - they have all held the same information in their hands and read the same news. Thus the reader - being aware of this indirectly shared experience - imagines his community of fellow readers. Because it is a broad topic, I will concentrate on the discourse about accommodation, or separation of state and church in America, with a focus on Stephen L. Carter ¿ a distinguished law professor at Yale University. My thesis is that although Carter claims to be a separatist, his contradictory and biased arguments in most of his books indicate his accommodationist position. His methods are the dichotomization of church and state; his claim that society victimizes religion (his strange comparison of the Civil Rights movement and the Anti-Abortion movement); his assertion that religious people are oppressed by the majority (which according to him is religious), the Supreme Court, and American politics. Carter further maintains that religion is trivialized and privatized. His biased view on law is visible in the cases he discusses (predominantly separatist cases). His suggestive and popular style, as well as his constant references to God¿s will and his opinion that the Bible justifies almost everything, makes his argumentation nearly untouchable. Ich werde im folgenden Text versuchen die wandernde Grenze Nordamerikas aus verschiedenen Positionen zu betrachten, um die nationale und welthistorische Bedeutung zu verdeutlichen. Dabei gehe ich im Speziellen auf die Innen¿ und Außenpolitik, die Wirtschaft sowie den technologischen Fortschritt der USA seit dem Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts ein. Das Verhältnis von Siedlern und Indianern ist als ethnologischer Teilaspekt nicht außer Acht zu lassen.
