Pontius Meropius Anicius Paulinus was born into a wealthy Roman family in Bordeaux and was educated by the poet Ausonius. His career as a lawyer and senator included distinguished appointments in various parts of Italy, but he gradually became disillusioned with political life. He converted to Christianity, and began distributing his wealth to the poor. After the death of their infant son, Paulinus and his wife Therasia established a religious community at the shrine of St. Felix in Nola. The site included a monastery, basilica and guest houses for pilgrims. Paulinus' letters and lyrical poems, written between 395 and 431, tell of the depth of his continuous spiritual inquiry, but also describe the practical concerns of his mission in Nola. In Epistle no. 12 (numbered 32 in editions where the letters are organized by date), he discusses his plans for the construction and ornamentation of the new basilica, particularly the inscriptions that adorned the doorways and arches linking the buildings. Paulinus' collected letters and poems were first published in Paris in 1516. In this later edition, the letters are grouped by addressee, the majority to Paulinus' friend Sulpicius Severus (c.360-425). The preface and commentary are by Heribertus Rosweyde (1569-1629), a Jesuit scholar and the initial author of the Acta Sanctorum, a multi-volume hagiography published between 1643 and I794. The printers, Balthasar Moretus, Ioannes Moretus II, and Jean van Meurs, successors to the famous Plantin press, were active in Antwerp between 1618 and 1629.
