Volume one opens with the Spanish text of the 1542 Zamora printing of the Relacion, transcribed with an English translation on the facing page and annotated in footnotes. It works from the original Zamora text of 1542 rather than the later Valladolid text of 1555. A biography of Cabeza de Vaca follows, drawing on archival research. It covers his family name, his early years in Jerez, his governorship of Rio de la Plata, and his later arrest and imprisonment. The second volume examines the historical and geographical setting of the expedition. Its argument is that Narvaez was making for Panuco rather than Florida, and it also reconstructs the survivors' route inland from the Texas coast. Other sections compare the 1542 and 1555 texts against earlier conquest writing and against Spanish policy on the treatment of native peoples.
