Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Prague: Jan Stenc, Mánes, 1921-1926 in four volumes (all published). Quartos, cloth, original wrappers in folios. An important quarterly journal founded and edited by architect Pavel Janák . Janák (1881-1956) is recognized as one of the driving forces in Czech modern architecture. His work spans from the Secessionist through Cubist, Rondo-Cubist and ultimately to Functionalist periods, and he produced key works in every area of design employing these aesthetics, including the notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk, where every part of the building and fixture was inclusive and integral to the design. He was also a interior and furniture designer, urban planner, teacher and theoretician. While Janák edited many journals and was active in many aspects of writing and publishing, he considered this one of his most important and entirely his own, which appeared from 1921 to 1925. In 1925 the journal produced ten numbers in a folio carton, with several treating the 1925 Paris Exposition of Decorative Arts in detail which makes this a valuable reference. All aspects of the arts and crafts are treated with great care and attention, resulting in fine documentation of glasswork, industrial design, typography, fine printing, and stage design. janak's approach was somewhat conservative, embracing good design revealing the best of Czech culture into modernism without taking the most advanced avant-garde notions of the day. Year I clothbound, all other volumes loose with original wrappers, as issued. This all published collection includes all the inserts and flyers that appeared originally which include architect and design announcements, publisher notices, and other miscellany which are usually lost. All in very good to fine condition. Recorded in five North American libraries.…
