He left Yale and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 during World War II and was discharged in 1944 because of malaria. In 1963, Mr. Evans and Mr. Novak began writing ''Inside Report,'' an insider's view of politics that was published four times a week until Mr. Evans retired in 1993. Mr. Evans and Robert Novak began their work as columnists in the early 1960's, a time when newspaper columnists wielded outsize influence in national politics. The pair pioneered in transferring that influence to the medium of cable television with the political discussion program ''Evans & Novak'' -- carried on CNN from that cable network's beginning. Rowland Evans and his wife Kay (Katherine Winton Evans), also a respected writer and editor, were mainstays on the Washington social scene, hosting many memorable gatherings in their handsome Georgetown house -- to which flocked influential and remarkable people drawn from journalism, politics and general society over the decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. V cervenci 1992 odstoupil Vaclav Havel ze sve funkce prezidenta Ceske a Slovenske Federativni Republiky. Mel jsem tu cest byt osmnact mesicu jednim z jeho poradcu. Odesli jsme vsichni z Hradu spolu s hlavou statu. Od te doby jsem se zase mohl plne venovat novinareni, napsal jsem na dve ste komentaru pro rozhlasovou stanici Svobodna Evropa, pro Radioforum prazskeho Radiozurnalu a pro Lidove noviny. Zejmena posluchaci obou rozhlasovych stanic mi casto psali, ze by si radi precetli, co jim na radiovych vlnach uniklo. To by ovsem nebyl dostatecny duvod k jejich kniznimu zpracovani. Ale prolistovani rukopisu ukazalo, ze tyto komentare k dosti dramatickym udalostem let 1992-93 (pocinajicich prave Havlovou abdikaci a vrcholicich rozdelenim statu) podavaji celistvejsi obraz, nez se mohlo zdat ve chvili, kdy byly psany. Zaroven leckdy upominaji na problemy a otazky, ktere se nam stale vraceji a vyzaduji vzdy znovu nasi pozornost. Je na ctenari, aby posoudil, zda tomu tak je. Pri redakci pro tento svazek jsem v puvodnim textu nic nemenil, a to i tam, kde jsem se (jak se ukazalo) mylil, leccos nedomyslel nebo prehnal. Vynechal jsem ty casti, ktere se opakovaly. Z duvodu stylistickych jsem pamatoval na to, ze psane slovo, na rozdil od mluveneho, nekdy vyzaduje vetsi uspornost. I v techto pripadech, neprilis cetnych, slo o ryze kosmeticky zasah do puvodniho textu.…
