The translator, John Payne, was an eccentric poet, friend of Pre-Raphaelites and the Bloomsbury Group. Among his correspondents were Sir Richard Burton, Ford Madox Brown, E. Burne Jones, and D. Garnett. Burton enthusiastically approved Payne's translation. Resembles in most respects the Villon Society limited edition of 1882. However these volumes have no illustrations, and no statement of limitation. Alaeddin has a 1/4 inch tear to spine head; Volume VIII has a half-inch loss to spine head.
