Brussel VUBPress 2006 Softcover, 431pp., 16x24cm., in zeer goede staat. ISBN 9789054873983. Onbekend maakt onbemind. Beter kan men het grafische syndicalisme in België niet omschrijven. Geen enkele vakbeweging had in het verleden immers af te rekenen met zoveel vooroordelen als de grafische. Oorzaak: haar vroege ontstaan, waardo…or ze vaak spontaan geassocieerd werd met een (socialistische) arbeiders- en vakbeweging die in het grootste deel van de 19e eeuw nog veel kinderziekten doormaakte. De verleiding om de grafische en ook andere geschoolde arbeiders verantwoordelijk te stellen voor die onvolkomenheden was dan ook bijzonder groot. Zo ontstond het populaire en hardnekkige beeld van de grafici die als arbeidsaristocraten de socialistische arbeiders- en vakbeweging meesleurden in hun reformistische maatschappijvisie. Wie vertrouwd is met de syndicale historiografie moet echter meteen toegeven dat dit beeld berust op een wel heel partiele kennis van het grafische syndicalisme. De doelstellingen van dit werk spreken dan ook voor zich. De geschiedenis van het grafische syndicalisme verder aanvullen en opnieuw bekijken. Door de grafische vakbeweging ten gronde te bestuderen, wil het een eerlijk beeld schetsen van de grafici, hun vakbonden en hun bijdrage aan het ontstaan en de uitbouw van de Belgische vakbeweging.

Met beren en apen refereerde men in het jargon van de boekarbeiders, in de 19e eeuw, aan respectievelijk de boekdrukkers en de letterzetters. Boekdrukkers werd…en beren genoemd omdat men hen zag als ongemanierde, grove, ruwe lomperds. De introductie van de mechanische drukpers - en dus ook de machinegeleider - versterkte het beeld van de minder of weinig geschoolde drukker als 'ongelikte beer' alleen maar. De zetter dankte zijn koosnaam aan de snelle, aapachtige armbewegingen waarmee hij karakters uit zijn letterkast haalde om op zijn zethaak te plaatsen.
