Presents some edgewear, light age toning of pages and a heavy crease at the bottom rh corner, otherwise still a very good reading copy. Originally published in French with the title La Crise d'Octobre, this is an extremely controversial book covering the events in Quebec that led to the murder of Pierre Laporte and the invocation of the War Measures Act. In more detail: Gerard Pelletier was a prominent Canadian journalist, politician, and public intellectual who played a significant role in Quebec and Canadian public life during the mid to late twentieth century. He was born in 1919 in Victoriaville, Quebec, and became one of the leading francophone voices in Canadian federalism. He was a close associate and personal friend of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, and along with Trudeau and Jean Marchand formed a group that became known informally as the Three Wise Men, all three having moved from Quebec civil society and intellectual life into federal politics together in 1965. Pelletier served as a cabinet minister under Trudeau, holding the position of Secretary of State and later serving as Canadian Ambassador to France and then to the United Nations. He died in 1997. Before entering politics Pelletier had a distinguished career in journalism, serving as editor of the Montreal newspaper La Presse and earlier as a founding figure associated with the influential Quebec journal Cité Libre, which he co-founded with Trudeau and which became an important forum for progressive and federalist thought in Quebec during the Duplessis era and beyond. The October Crisis is Pelletier's account of the events surrounding the FLQ crisis of October 1970, one of the most dramatic and controversial episodes in modern Canadian history. The FLQ, or Front de libération du Québec, was a militant separatist organization that carried out a campaign of bombings and political violence during the 1960s, culminating in October 1970 with the kidnapping of British trade commissioner James Cross and the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Quebec cabinet minister Pierre Laporte. In response to these events the Trudeau government invoked the War Measures Act, suspending civil liberties and allowing for mass arrests without charge across Quebec. This decision was deeply controversial and remains a subject of historical debate, with supporters arguing it was necessary to restore order and opponents contending it was a severe overreaction that trampled on fundamental rights. Pelletier's book offers an insider account of those events written from the perspective of someone who was part of the federal cabinet at the time and therefore directly involved in the decisions being made. The book provides his reflections on why the government acted as it did, the atmosphere of crisis that prevailed in Ottawa and Montreal during those weeks, and his own assessment of whether the measures taken were justified. As a participant rather than a detached observer, his account carries the weight of direct experience while also reflecting the particular perspective of someone who was a defender of the government's actions. The book is considered a valuable primary source for understanding the federal government's thinking during the crisis, though readers and historians naturally weigh it alongside other accounts that offer different perspectives, including those more critical of the decision to invoke the War Measures Act. It forms part of a broader literature on the October Crisis that includes works by journalists, historians, and other participants on various sides of the events.
