A refined Italian language publication in two tomes, reconstructing the intricate vicissitudes of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, built at the time of pope Damaso between the years 366-384, then largely destroyed according to the wishes of Cardinal Raffaele Riario in order to build his own residence, currently known as Palazzo della Cancelleria, the Papal Chancellery. This first tome is dedicated to the long urban history of the area surrounding Palazzo della Cancelleria, and the turbulent history of the construction of the Palace itself, reporting researches carried out during the excavations performed in the 1930s and the results of archaeological investigations effected between 1988 and 1993. The collected data covering about 1500 years and the extent of information deduced during the excavations afford a comprehensive picture of the history of the basilica, truly prominent for the wide range of treated topics: the historical and political setting of the origins of the construction of the building; architectural surveys, with reports of the numerous building phases and reconstruction hypothesis; scientific analysis of the discovered finds; reconstructions of the social life of Rome in the 4th century; the identification of monuments of high artistic value. This second volume is dedicated to the investigations executed on a selection of materials discovered during the numerous excavation campaigns realised in the past centuries excluding the reliefs of the Flavian age and the ara of Vicomagistri up to those carried out between 1988 and 1993. Enhanced by an extraordinary series of precious black and white and colours plates of the finds, numerous are the treated topics: the exposure of numismatic finds and the reconstruction of the epigraphs, divided into latin and greek; the description of the numerous tomb finds; the analysis of wall frescoes, mosaics and bricksworks. An profound study of ceramics and glass materials, discovered during the excavation carried out in the second half of the 16th century, revealed the huge variety of artistic expressions, epochs and places of production. Particularly prominent is the examination of the skeletal remains found in a grave dating back to the 15th century, which permitted to make hypothesis about the conditions of life in Rome in the second half of the 15th century.
