Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Philosophy, as Aristotle said, originates in wonder; and non-human animals have long been a source of wonder to humans. This is especially evident in the question what treatment the former deserve by the latter. Western philosophy has been concerned with the way in which we ought to treat non-human animals since its very origins in pre-Socratic philosophy. Even nowadays animal ethics continues to be a highly challenging field and one of the liveliest areas of debate within ethics. It is a controversial subject that has sparked a range of new and exciting debates, but it has also led to the renewed exploration of long-standing philosophical issues with innovative approaches. This book offers both the presentation and discussion of a range of influential past approaches to animal ethics and an equally significant range of contemporary ones. To get a full view of the complex field of animal ethics, we need to understand the philosophical legacy of the past and the resources it offers while also forging new views that consider our increasingly developed understanding of the nature of non-human animals. The volume includes contributions by celebrated philosopher Peter Singer, animal rights activist and philosopher Steven Best, and many more. The volume contains articles by George Arabatzis, Steven Best, Stephen R. L. Clark, Myrto Dragona-Monachou, Warwick Fox, Gary L. Francione, Xavier Labbee, Panagiotis Pantazakos, Filimon Peonidis, Evangelos D. Protopapadakis, Tom Regan, Mark J. Rowlands, Roger Scruton, Peter Singer, Gary Steiner, and Georgios Steiris. The first three refer to the early history of freedom of expression focusing on the work of James and John Stuart Mill and its possible significance in a contemporary setting. The remaining five deal with current issues such as the prerequisites of a free speech theory, defamation, the regulation of pro-terrorist speech, the harsh criticism of religious dogmas as part of religious freedom, and the controversies surrounding campaign financing in the United States. Taken together these essays can be seen as a philosophical exploration of various aspects of freedom of expression, which is here understood as a moral and political value of paramount importance.Filimon Peonidis is Professor of Moral and Political Philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Although democracy is in principle associated with popular rule, in practice it is best described as rule by elected elites. This form of government is not only wanting from a theoretical point of view, but it also no longer seems to meet the expectations of large segments of the citizenry. This book offers a blueprint for an alternative democratic model, democracy as popular sovereignty. Starting with the idea that the people, generously defined, are sovereign when they rule as equally valuable and fully participating members of a self-governing collectivity, this model tries to describe the constitutional and institutional arrangements necessary to achieve a workable version of this idea in advanced democratic states. This implies among other changes a greater dose of direct democracy, the use of sortition and a different conception of representation. The overall argument developed combines insights, facts, and findings from normative political theory, empirical political science, democracy's long history as well as from the recent burgeoning literature on participatory and deliberative democracy.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Individuals who value personal autonomy and sympathize with others can be guided by a set of central obligations that are familiar to those sharing in the Western moral tradition. These obligations may not be applicable to every imaginable situation, but the informed determination to act upon them is necessary for combating serious and easily identifiable moral evils. This overall argument is called a post-Kantian moral image. Here, 'moral image' is understood as a comprehensive pattern of ethical thought that retains a high level of generality and imposes some order on our normative considerations. The characterization 'post-Kantian' indicates that the proposed moral image is inspired by and draws upon Kant's practical philosophy. At the same time it avoids certain problematic Kantian positions and incorporates others that have been vehemently rejected by Kant- like the key role of emotion- in undertaking and justifying morality.
