CU3 - A 3rd printing hardcover book SIGNED and inscribed by Morgan Peoples to previous owner on the upper part of the front free endpaper in very good condition in fair dust jacket that is mylar protected. Dust jacket has wrinkling, chipping, crease, and tears on the edges, corners and some sides, some scattered light scratches, rubbing, and scuffing, light tanning and shelf wear. Book has some bumped corners, previous owner's inscription written on the lower part of the front free endpaper, light discoloration and shelf wear. Southern Biography Series, William J. Cooper, Jr., Editor. 9.5"x6.5", 312 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Earl Kemp Long was an American politician and the 45th Governor of Louisiana, serving three nonconsecutive terms. Long, known as "Uncle Earl", connected with voters through his folksy demeanor and colorful oratory. He departed from other southern politicians of his time by promoting a progressive agenda, expanding school-lunch programs, teacher pay, public-works projects, and minority voting rights. His sometimes erratic behavior - including a liaison with New Orleans stripper Blaze Starr - did not affect his electoral success. Long served as governor from 1939 to 1940, 1948 to 1952, and 1956 to 1960. He was nominated in the summer of 1960 to the United States House of Representatives for Louisiana's 8th congressional district, since disbanded because of demographic changes, but he died before he could take office. He was elected as lieutenant governor and served from 1936-1939. Trying to keep a close hand in state government, Long failed in three other bids to be elected lieutenant governor, in 1932, 1944, and 1959. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.

Full title - UNCLE EARL DESERVED BETTER; CRITICAL ANALYSES OF BLAZE, A FILM WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY RON SHELTON, AND EARL K. LONG - THE SAGA OF UNCLE EARL AND LOUISIANA POLITICS, BY MICHAEL L. KURTZ AND MORGAN PEOPLES, WITH FURTHER COMMENTARY ON THE LAST OF THE RED-HOT PAPAS BY JACK B. MCGUIRE. First printing (per publisher's statement and number line upon copyright page) SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. [8], i-xvi, 1-259, [1], [48]pages. Paperback: H 23.25cm x L 15.5cm. Paper covers rubbed with some scuffs at edges; impression from removed paper clip at front cover's top center. Author's six-line black ink inscription "With best regards on | Uncle Earl's 180th Birthday. | Jack B. McGuire | The Earl K. Long Centennial | Winnfield, Louisiana | August 26, 1995" on the half-title page; red ink date stamp at title page's top right; interior pages are otherwise bright and clean. Binding retains some crispness. With concluding unpaged section (forty-eight pages) of b/w plates. Laid-in between front cover verso and half-title is a folded sheet of United States Representative Robert L. Livingston's congressional office stationery which is the only evidence of the book's provenance as it unfortunately lacks a Livingston inscription/signature. Republican Bob Livingston served as U.S. Representative from Louisiana's 1st District from 1977 to 1999 and chaired the House Appropriations Committee from 1995 to 1999 as well as being House Speaker-designate before his resignation from office.
