Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Jivya Soma Mashe, a Warli artist, created unique, animist-inspired paintings. His work gained international acclaim, exhibited at prestigious venues like the Centre Pompidou. This is the first book to be entirely dedicated to the artwork of Jivya Soma Mashe. Through the quality of his work, Jivya Soma Mashe stands comparison with other outstanding enigmatic artists, such as Bill Traylor or Frederic Bruly Bouabre, who broaden our understanding of the diversity of forms and cultures. Jivya Soma Mashe (19342018) is a legendary figure among his people, the Warli, a tribe of around 300,000 inhabiting an area 150 km north of Mumbai (Maharashtra, India). Its members are animists and speak a language that has never developed a written form. To the best of human memory, it is Warli women who have always painted ritual and ephemeral paintings directly on the walls of their huts. The Warli have developed an extremely basic pictography based on circles, triangles, and squares to express their animist culture and represent their only deity, the mother goddess Palghatta, at the centre of each painting. After losing his mother at a young age, Jivya Soma Mashe took refuge in drawing, immersing himself in a personal style that first elicited the admiration of his peers and later that of regional, national, and international authorities. Jivya Soma Mashe received his first national award in 1976 from Indira Gandhi herself. His works featured prominently in the Magiciens de la terre exhibition (Centre Pompidou, Paris 1989) and in the exhibition celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Cartier Foundation (Paris 2014). Text in English and French. AUTHOR: Herve Perdriolle is an art critic and exhibition organiser. After co-ordinating the first show of the French Figuration Libre movement (Blanchard, Boisrond, Combas, Di Rosa, Viollet) in Paris (1981), he organised the first exhibitions of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring at Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1984). SELLING POINTS: . This is the only comprehensive book dedicated to the art of Jivya Soma Mashe, making it a unique and essential resource . Mashe's work has been featured in prestigious exhibitions like Magiciens de la terre (Centre Pompidou) and a Cartier Foundation anniversary exhibition, highlighting his global recognition . Mashe is compared to enigmatic artists like Bill Traylor and Frederic Bruly Bouabre, positioning him within a respected lineage of self-taught artists . The book offers a deep dive into the art of the Warli tribe, providing insight into their animist beliefs and traditions 150 colour illustrations Jivya Soma Mashe, a Warli artist, created unique, animist-inspired paintings. His work gained international acclaim, exhibited at prestigious venues like the Centre Pompidou. Text in English and French. Paperback. Condizione: Good. Welcome to Richard Long ? Jivya S. Mashe: Un Incontro (2004) by Hervé Perdriolle and Martin Jean Hubert (Mazzotta) ? a book about an ?encounter? that sounds politely Italian and art-world elegant, but is really a quiet, stubborn celebration of two artists who can make you stop, stare, and think: Wait? is this art? (Yes. Also: that?s the point.) This is a meeting of worlds and methods. On one side, Richard Long , patron saint of the purposeful walk ? the artist who can cross a landscape, rearrange a few stones, draw a line, take a photograph, and somehow make you feel the weight of distance, time, weather, and human presence with almost nothing ?made? at all. On the other, Jivya Soma Mashe , whose work carries the pulse of a different visual language entirely ? earthy, intimate, rhythmic, deeply rooted, and quietly electrifying. Put them together and you get a dialogue that isn?t about shouting style; it?s about mark-making , place , and the mysterious way a gesture can hold meaning without explaining itself. ?Incontro? here is doing a lot of work. It?s not a ?collaboration? in the corporate sense, and it?s not a gimmick. It?s more like the book itself is a room where two sensibilities are allowed to sit opposite each other and let the viewer do the connecting. Expect pages that feel like a conversation conducted through images, textures, and the kind of restraint that makes the brain lean forward. This is the art world?s version of a meaningful silence. Because yes ? this is one of those books where you might find yourself thinking very seriously about stones, footprints, lines, and marks that look deceptively simple. You may even have an existential moment about a circle of rocks. That?s normal. It happens. It?s the price of admission to minimalism with a heartbeat. Published by Mazzotta , it has that handsome, gallery-book feel: thoughtful layout, strong reproduction, and an overall sense that this belongs on a shelf where people will occasionally pick it up, go quiet, and then say something like, ?This is really? beautiful ,? as if surprised by their own sincerity. Condition: Good , meaning it?s been handled and appreciated ? not pristine, but very much presentable, like an art book that has actually done its job rather than living untouched as a decorative prop. It?s ready for its next owner: someone who enjoys art that doesn?t shout, but lingers. Perfect for: fans of land art, minimalism, and work that?s about the world as much as the studio, readers who like art books that feel like an essay in images, and anyone who enjoys the quiet thrill of understanding something without being spoon-fed. Sold by Crappy Old Books , naturally ? the ideal place for a beautifully serious art encounter to turn up slightly scuffed, patiently waiting for someone to open it and fall into a calm, thoughtful rabbit hole of lines, marks, and the strange magic of leaving only the lightest trace.

Hardback. Condizione: New. Who is Samantha McEwen?Who is this Anglo-American artist born in 1960 in London, about whom Keith Haring declares in one of his interviews: "When I arrived in New York, I spent my time at school (School of Visual Arts). Everything was new and exciting. I was 20 years old. In my drawing class, I was immediately drawn to a girl named Samantha McEwen." Samantha remembers: "He sat in front of me and said: 'Can I draw you?'"Who is this artist, still relatively unknown to this day, who also models for Francesco Clemente and Alex Katz? In the 1980s, Samantha McEwen was one of the few women to exhibit twice in the famous Tony Shafrazi Gallery. She also participates in numerous group exhibitions alongside the leading artists of that flamboyant decade. However, very few texts exist about her work; art critics are mainly men who write about men. In the numerous articles of the art press on these exhibitions, her name is merely mentioned and rarely accompanied by a few lines. A revealing paradox of that era, Samantha McEwen is found in full-page spreads in the fashion sections of major magazines, such as Interview (Andy Warhol's magazine) and The New York Times Magazine. By the late 1980s in New York, most of Samantha's friends disappear, taken by AIDS or drugs. Samantha McEwen returns to live in London and begins (or simply continues) a long period of obscurity, like most female artists of those generations. It takes until the 2010s for her work to reappear. This happens in 2015 in London, in the famous group exhibition organised by Pace Gallery in homage to the great London art dealer Robert Fraser. 48 artists are presented, 45 men and 3 women.Text in English and French.
