"Intelligent, curious, restless, and a vagabond, the Veronese painter Giovan Francesco Caroto worked in Mantua, at the court of the Gonzagas, under the aegis of Mantegna; in Milan, in the service of Antonio Maria Visconti; in Casale Monferrato, at the court of the Marquis Guglielmo Paleologo. He knew and appreciated Flemish and Northern European painting (between Milan, Verona, and Venice), but also Raphael and his followers, so much so that the hypothesis of his study trip to Rome is credible. He practiced painting, miniatures, naturalistic drawing, medals, and statuary. He devoted himself above all to religious painting, both public and private, but achieved perhaps his most personal and successful results in portraiture and landscape painting. This volume is the first monographic instrument dedicated to Caroto in the last fifty years. In addition to addressing the various aspects of his activity with a series of essays and with notes dedicated to his most important works, it presents a complete documentary register, an anthology of his critical acclaim, and an overview of his presence in Veronese collecting.
