He knew and appreciated Flemish and Northern European painting (between Milan, Verona, and Venice), but also Raphael and his followers, so much so that the hypothesis of his study trip to Rome is credible. He practiced painting, miniatures, naturalistic drawing, medals, and statuary. He devoted himself above all to religious painting, both public and private, but achieved perhaps his most personal and successful results in portraiture and landscape painting.
