A collection of 3 articles from some of the first settlers in San Bernardino as follows: 1. Bear Valley Trip, August 7-15, 1899, by John C. Perry. John C. Perry was born in Massachusetts in about 1871, or possibly on December 14, 1872. By 1896 he had moved to Los Angeles with his wife Esther and worked first as a bookkeeper for Land of Sunshine Magazine, and later as secretary and treasurer for Out West Magazine. After 1907 he worked as an orchardist and, while briefly maintaining a business address in Los Angeles, moved to Highland in San Bernardino County; 2. Early Team and Wagon Trip Through the San Bernardino Mountains by Walter Zimmerman. The Zimmerman family was one of the earliest families settling in this area - the main family residence being at Santa Ana Avenue and Lilac Avenue.Johann Vincent (J.V.) Zimmerman (1846-1924), Walter Zimmerman's father, was a native of Germany. The family arrived from Germany in 1852. Walter was one of 10 children of J.V and his second wife, Emma Sophie Minzenmayer; 3. My Recollections of East Highlands 1908 - 1920 by Alice Van Boven. Alice Perry Van Boven was the daughter of John C. Perry (author of the first article). She moved to live with her father in the East Highlands in 1908 and stayed through the 1940's. Alice paints a vivid portait of early life in the East Highlands, describing every day chores, amusements and education in the area. She also describes the challanges facing orange growers - weather, unions, Spanish flu. An excellent set of personal recollections of life in San Berardino in the early 1900's.
