Vintage borderless matte-finish photograph from the set of the 1959 film, showing director John Ford smoking a cigar with model China Machado, who was then dating leading actor William Holden. With the stamp of still photographer Peter Basch on the verso, along with manuscript pencil annotations identifying Ford and Machado. Loosely based on the 1956 novel by Harold Sinclair, which in turn was based on the historic Civil War battle of Newton's Station and Grierson's Raid. A Union cavalry brigade's mission behind Confederate lines is complicated when they are forced to take a woman prisoner after she overhears their plans. Set in the American South, shot on location in Louisiana and Mississippi. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.
