Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Before architects and city designers can begin to make changes in the actual physical environment, they must create representations of their designs. These can range from two-dimensional maps, charts, and diagrams to computer models. Each presents an abstraction, reducing reality to facts that can be clearly conveyed. In Representation of Places Peter Bosselmann asks how the experience of a rich and complex world - both the world we know and the changed world designers envision - can be adequately communicated. The designers' representation of planned structures and their environment significantly influences what gets built. Can images accurately match a designer's conception to a future reality? In addition to providing a timely discussion for professionals of the relation between new technologies and strategies of visual communication, Representation of Places has much to offer the general reader interested in the form of cities. Peter Bosselmann outlines a critical, normative framework needed to evaluate representations of design. 'Bosselmann's extensive academic explorations and professional experience make him the acknowledged expert to guide us in this new era of design simulation. Besides his broad knowledge of media, he brings to his subject a genuine concern for design quality and social responsibility. . . . [This book] is likely to become required reading for anyone interested in design.'--Robert S. Harris, FAIA, University of Southern California Covers slightly bowed, light wear along edges. It is a publication that explores the history of pedagogical concepts of German-born professors of architecture at schools in the United States. The research and book publication are structured in three parts; it aims to make a significant contribution to the understanding of architectural education in the United States and its historical cross-fertilisation with German educational concepts at large, with research outcomes responding directly to current and future educational and societal challenges. The ideals of the Bauhaus school shaped more than just design and architecture around the world; these guiding principles and pedagogy also transformed teaching. The project examines the post-Bauhaus influence on these German-born educators today and how the Bauhaus model has evolved over the last 50 years. There are currently over 30 German-born educators, active in shaping architectural and design education in the US, influencing thousands of students as the next generation of future architects in this country. Compared to other professions, succeeding in studies of architecture is known as a long endeavor that requires a strong commitment and dedication from the student. The task for the educators is to shape the next generation of architects as well as possible and, at the same time, turn it into a positive experience and fun to be part of this demanding profession. The book features interviews (conversations) with selected professors and explores how the Bauhaus legacy of Gropius and Mies van der Rohe is still relevant for their educational strategies and design teaching today. The Bauhaus aimed to unite all creative arts through direct field and workshop experience in the crafts with a concentration on modern materials, industrial techniques and mass production. It was initially a school of design which included architecture, and not a school of architecture per se. Gropius resigned in 1928, and it was largely under the directorship of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe from 1930 to 1933 that the Bauhaus developed into a school of architecture with subsidiary art and workshop departments. The pedagogical experiments of the Bauhaus, imported by Gropius, Mies, Hilberseimer, Albers and others to the US system, challenged traditional Beaux-Arts thinking and played a crucial role in shaping modern architectural education. Historically, the German architectural training has always been different from the French tradition. These new interdisciplinary and technology-focused modes of teaching architecture and design had long-lasting impact, however, are now again transformed by the educators currently active in reshaping curricula. The conversations reveal the critical and independent thinking of this group and how they make a meaningful contribution to the discourse of architectural education appropriate to the 21st century. Authored by an internationally recognised scholar with personal insig.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Adaptations of the Metropolitan Landscape in Delta Regions is about environmental quality and the long term livability of urban areas. In decades to come, climate change will affect cities everywhere, but nowhere have the effects of climate change already been felt as strongly as in low-lying coastal cities, cities located in large river deltas and near tidal estuaries. This book reflects on the contribution that spatial planning and urban design can make to a complex discussion about how city form and landscapes will need to adapt within metropolitan areas. The books focus is on the urban form of three delta regions: the Pearl River Delta in Southern China; the Rhine, Maas, and Scheldt Delta in the Netherlands; and the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California. The three regions differ greatly, but despite their different political systems, history, culture and locations in three different climate zones, all three regions will be forced to respond to similar issues that will trigger transformations and adaptations to their urban form. Richly illustrated in color with detailed diagrams, models, photographs and sketches, the book is written for students, scholars and practitioners of environmental planning, and designers who need to respond to the future form of cities in light of climate change. For the professions shaping the physical world of cities and regions, the challenge is not only one of designing physical geometries but of social consequences. Adaptations of the Metropolitan Landscape in Delta Regions focuses on the urban form of three delta regions, the Pearl River Delta in Southern China, the Rhine, Maas, and Scheldt Delta in the Netherlands and the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California.
