Diese haben für die Entwicklung und Dynamik der natürlichen Ökosysteme eine wichtige, wenngleich auch aus heutiger Sicht nicht exakt quantifizierbare Rolle gespielt. Im Zuge der Umwandlung der Naturlandschaften in Kulturlandschaften und mit zunehmender menschlicher Besiedlung wurden insbesondere große Arten, wie der Auerochse, ausgerottet oder überlebten nur in Gefangenschaft, wie der Wisent. Nur über die Zucht in Zoos und Wildgehegen gelang es, den Wisent zu erhalten. Seit den 1950er Jahren erfolgten umfangreiche Wiederansiedelungen, die sich bislang jedoch auf Osteuropa beschränken. Ziel des in diesem Band dokumentierten, in 2005 begonnenen E+E-Vorhabens war es, die Voraussetzungen und Möglichkeiten einer Freisetzung in Deutschland (Rothaargebirge im Süden Nordrhein-Westfalens) zu prüfen und zu erproben. Damit sollte nicht nur ein Beitrag zum Schutz dieser gefährdeten Art geleistet, sondern insbesondere auch untersucht werden, wie sich der Wisent in die heutigen kulturgeprägten Ökosysteme einfügt und welche Rolle er darin spielen kann. Zugleich galt es zu klären, ob eine Koexistenz mit den im Rothaargebirge lebenden bzw. sich dort erholenden Menschen möglich ist und welche Vorkehrungen dafür getroffen werden müssen.
